Spain Deploys 1,900 Troops as Deadly Wildfires Ravage Southern Europe

Spain has reinforced its firefighting efforts as deadly wildfires sweep through the nation and neighbouring Portugal, leaving destruction, mass evacuations, and raising urgent alarms about climate change’s intensifying grip on southern Europe’s summer landscapes

Spain has reinforced its firefighting efforts by deploying 500 additional troops, bringing the total number of military personnel battling raging wildfires to 1,900, as the death toll from the blazes has climbed to four.

The most recent fatality was reported on Sunday when a firefighter lost his life in Castile and León after his truck fell down a steep hill during operations. Expressing grief over the tragedy, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez shared his “sadness” and “desolation” on X, formerly Twitter.

Neighbouring Portugal has also been gripped by blazes, with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirming that a firefighter died in a “tragic” traffic accident on Sunday. Two others were left injured as wildfires continue to devastate large parts of the country’s north and central regions.

Across southern Europe, wildfires have been worsened by an intense heatwave, with Greece, France, Turkey, and the Balkans also reporting severe outbreaks.

The scorching conditions, scientists warn, are becoming more frequent and extreme due to climate change, pushing firefighting systems across the continent to their limits.

In Spain, more than 27,000 residents have been evacuated, particularly from the northwest and western regions. Castile and León remains the hardest hit, with local media reporting that smoke has made the air “unbreathable.”

Fires have also devastated Cáceres, where 11,000 hectares of land have been destroyed, while the northwestern region of Galicia is battling twelve separate blazes. The largest, in the province of Ourense, has scorched 17,500 hectares.

The destruction has come with a human toll. Alongside the recent fatalities, at least five people were injured in Castile and León over the weekend, four of them critically. Earlier in the week, two volunteers died fighting flames in León, while another man was killed near Madrid.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), Spain has lost approximately 343,000 hectares of land to fires in 2025 so far—nearly double last year’s total. Portugal, meanwhile, has recorded around 216,000 hectares burned.

Spanish authorities have also begun cracking down on illegal burning. The Civil Guard announced sanctions against four individuals accused of carrying out unauthorised burns in Galicia. Officials reminded residents that causing a wildfire, even unintentionally, is a criminal offence.

Both Spain and Portugal have activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism, enabling international support. Firefighters from other countries have been deployed, and both nations will be receiving two additional firefighting planes to strengthen aerial suppression efforts.

Wildfires are not uncommon in southern Europe’s summer months, but their growing scale and intensity are ringing alarm bells. Spain’s state meteorological agency has warned that heatwaves, prolonged drought, and extreme weather—all linked to climate change—are making conditions more dangerous and increasing the likelihood of catastrophic blazes.

As communities across Spain and Portugal grieve their losses and brace for continued evacuations, the fires serve as a stark reminder of the escalating climate crisis and its devastating consequences for southern Europe’s vulnerable landscapes.
