Istria County, Croatia: Authorities continue extensive investigation into fatal German-registered aircraft crash that killed four Austrian nationals near Medulin

MEDULIN, Croatia – Croatian authorities are continuing their investigation into a fatal aircraft accident near the coastal municipality of Medulin in Istria County that claimed the lives of four Austrian citizens.

The crash occurred on the morning of 4 June 2026 as a German-registered aircraft was approaching its destination in Croatia after departing from Linz, Austria. The incident has prompted a coordinated investigation involving police, aviation experts and prosecutors.

According to the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia (DORH), an on-site investigation was launched immediately after the accident was reported in the Municipality of Medulin.

Officials confirmed that all four occupants of the aircraft died when the plane impacted the ground. The victims were Austrian nationals born in 1978, 1968, 1986 and 1961.

The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released as authorities continue to follow procedures related to family notification and the ongoing investigation.

The inquiry is being conducted by officers from the Istria Police Administration in cooperation with investigators from Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency. A deputy county state attorney from the County State Attorney’s Office in Pula also participated in investigative activities at the scene.

Authorities stated that the crash site was carefully examined as part of efforts to determine the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Investigators have ordered examinations and autopsies of the victims. These procedures are expected to provide additional information that may assist officials in reconstructing the final moments of the flight.

The aircraft involved in the accident had been registered in Germany and was operating a route between Linz and Medulin. The flight was nearing completion when the crash occurred.

While authorities have confirmed basic details surrounding the aircraft and its route, they have not released information regarding the type of aircraft, the number of crew members on board, or any preliminary findings concerning the possible cause of the accident.

Officials emphasized that investigations into aviation accidents are often complex and can require extensive technical analysis before definitive conclusions can be reached.

Experts are expected to examine aircraft wreckage, maintenance records, weather conditions, flight planning information and communication records as part of the broader investigation.

The involvement of Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency indicates that a specialized aviation safety review will accompany the criminal and prosecutorial aspects of the inquiry.

Such investigations typically focus not only on determining what happened but also on identifying factors that could help prevent similar accidents in the future.

The crash has drawn attention in both Croatia and Austria, where authorities and relatives await further information regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Medulin, located on the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula, is a well-known tourist destination that attracts visitors from across Europe. The municipality regularly receives private and recreational aircraft, particularly during the summer travel season.

The fatal accident has shocked local residents and visitors alike, with emergency services responding rapidly after the aircraft came down.

Croatian authorities have praised the cooperation between investigative agencies involved in the case, noting that multiple institutions are working together to establish a complete picture of the events leading up to the crash.

The State Attorney’s Office said that additional investigative measures and actions are currently underway. These efforts are aimed at identifying all relevant facts and circumstances surrounding the accident.

At this stage, investigators have not indicated whether mechanical failure, human factors, weather conditions or other issues may have contributed to the crash.

Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while technical experts continue their work.

Aviation accident investigations often take weeks or months to complete, depending on the complexity of the case and the amount of evidence that must be analyzed.

In many cases, investigators review cockpit instruments, aircraft components, maintenance documentation and witness accounts before issuing preliminary findings.

The final report is expected to provide a detailed reconstruction of the flight and any contributing factors identified during the investigation.

For now, authorities remain focused on gathering evidence and completing the necessary examinations to determine exactly what happened.

The deaths of the four Austrian citizens mark a tragic aviation incident for both Croatia and Austria, and investigators are continuing their efforts to provide answers to the victims’ families and the wider public.

As the investigation progresses, Croatian officials have pledged to release additional information once verified findings become available.

Until then, the cause of the crash remains unknown, and the inquiry into one of the region’s most serious recent aviation accidents remains ongoing.
