February 8 will be general election day in Ireland

Ireland will hold a general political election on Saturday, February 8, 2020, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has affirmed.

In an announcement, the Irish prime minister – who has driven a minority government since 2017.

He stated: “I have consistently said that the political decision ought to occur at the best time for the nation. Presently is that time.

“We have an arrangement on Brexit, and, after the decisive vote in place of Lodge last Thursday, it is presently sure that the UK will leave the EU on January 31 in an efficient manner.

“There will be no hard fringe, residents’ privileges will be ensured, and the Normal Travel Territory will stay set up. The Northern Ireland Gathering and Official have reconvened.”

Varadkar later posted a video on Twitter laying out what he sees as his accomplishments in power.

It is abnormal for Ireland to hold elections on Saturday, as they are generally conducted on Thursday or Friday.

Varadkar has been driving a minority government for a long time since taking over from the former Prime Minister Enda Kenny in 2017.
