Emmanuel Grégoire Wins Paris Mayoral Race as Left Strengthens Nationwide

France’s municipal elections deliver mixed outcomes as the left secures key cities like Paris and Marseille, while the far-right National Rally claims significant gains elsewhere, highlighting a shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential race

Emmanuel Grégoire has secured victory in the Paris mayoral race, marking a major success for France’s left-wing alliance as municipal election results revealed a fragmented yet evolving political landscape across the country.

According to exit polls, Grégoire won between 51 and 53 percent of the vote, defeating conservative rival Rachida Dati, who conceded defeat following Sunday’s run-off vote.

The result ensures continuity in the French capital after outgoing mayor Anne Hidalgo, under whom Grégoire served as deputy.

Running on a united platform of Socialists, Greens, and Communists, Grégoire campaigned on a message of inclusivity, pledging that Paris would remain a “city of refuge” and a stronghold against right-wing and far-right ideologies.

His victory is being seen as a reaffirmation of left-wing influence in one of Europe’s most prominent cities.

Beyond Paris, the elections brought encouraging results for the left. In Marseille, incumbent mayor Benoît Payan was projected to win re-election comfortably with over 56 percent of the vote.

His success came after strategic consolidation among left-wing voters, including the withdrawal of a candidate from the hard-left France Unbowed party to avoid vote splitting.

Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, hailed the outcomes in both Paris and Marseille, emphasizing the role of the left as a barrier against the rise of the far right.

He declared that “only the left can prevent France from this regression,” underscoring the broader national stakes tied to local contests.

However, the elections also highlighted the growing influence of the far-right National Rally (RN). While the party fell short in key southern cities like Marseille and Toulon, it achieved a symbolic and strategic victory in Nice.

There, Éric Ciotti, a former conservative now aligned with the RN, emerged victorious, handing the party control of France’s fifth-largest city.

RN leader Jordan Bardella described the results as the party’s “biggest breakthrough” in municipal elections, pointing to gains in smaller municipalities and the consolidation of its support base.

The party had already demonstrated strength in the first round by retaining control of Perpignan and expanding its reach in several local constituencies.

Meanwhile, in Toulon, centre-right candidate Josée Massi defeated RN contender Laure Lavalette, indicating that while the far right is advancing, it still faces resistance in certain regions.

Elsewhere, former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe was re-elected mayor of Le Havre, a result that strengthens his profile ahead of a potential presidential run in 2027. Philippe used his victory speech to stress that moderate political forces can still prevail over more extreme movements.

Voter turnout stood at just over 48 percent, higher than during the pandemic-affected 2020 elections but lower than in 2014, reflecting moderate public engagement in local governance.

Overall, the municipal elections paint a complex picture of French politics: a resilient left holding major urban centers, a far-right gaining ground in key areas, and centrist figures maintaining relevance.

With the 2027 presidential election on the horizon, these results offer an early glimpse into the shifting dynamics that will shape France’s political future.
