Electric vehicle charging stations set to triple in Belgian supermarket car parks by 2024

In a significant move towards bolstering the infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) in Belgium, supermarket giants Lidl, Aldi, Delhaize, and Colruyt are gearing up to triple the number of EV charging stations in their car parks by the end of 2024

Brussels, Belgium: In a significant move towards bolstering the infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) in Belgium, supermarket giants Lidl, Aldi, Delhaize, and Colruyt are gearing up to triple the number of EV charging stations in their car parks by the end of 2024.

According to figures from Le Soir, this ambitious expansion aims to cater to the rising number of EV users while concurrently allowing major chains to underscore their commitment to environmental sustainability.

The commitment from these supermarket chains aligns with broader government initiatives aimed at making EVs more accessible to the public.

Notably, the Brussels-Capital Region introduced ‘Electrify. Brussels‘ in October, with plans to install 22,000 public charging stations and ensure that every resident is within 150 meters of a charging point by January of the following year.

While government efforts focus on democratizing EV ownership, supermarket chains are not shy about the commercial motivations behind expanding charging infrastructure.

An Aldi spokesperson stated, “The ultimate objective is to offer a supplementary service to our customers,” emphasizing the surging demand for electric vehicle charging points.

Lidl, previously a trailblazer in providing free charging stations, recently shifted to a paid model. This transition has been mirrored by other supermarkets, with preferential rates offered to customers.

Lidl charges €0.38/kWh, Delhaize charges €0.65/kWh, Aldi sets rates at €0.70/kWh for rapid charging and €0.55/kWh for slow charging.

Belgium’s push towards electric vehicles is propelled by the impending EU engine ban, slated to prohibit new CO2-emitting vehicles from 2035.

This regulatory drive underscores the urgency for developing robust charging infrastructure to accommodate the anticipated surge in EV adoption.

Despite the proactive measures, industry insiders warn of challenges in keeping pace with the accelerating demand.

EV Belgium coordinator Romain Denayer highlighted that, with an estimated two million electric vehicles in Belgium by 2030 (equivalent to one in three cars being electrified), a staggering 200,000 publicly accessible charging points will be required nationwide. Wallonia alone will need 70,000 charging points to meet this demand.

As of now, the charging infrastructure landscape in Belgium reveals approximately 28,000 charging points in Flanders, 5,000 in Wallonia, and 3,000 in Brussels.

Denayer stresses the critical need to expedite the development of charging points to align with the burgeoning EV market.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of both private enterprises and governmental bodies in expanding EV charging infrastructure signify a proactive approach to the future of sustainable transportation in Belgium.

While supermarkets seek to enhance customer services and embrace environmental responsibility, the looming challenge lies in meeting the ambitious targets set by the government to accommodate the rising tide of electric vehicles on Belgian roads.

The success of these initiatives will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the country’s transportation and environmental policies in the years to come.
