Cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand: People forced to swim to safer spaces

Residents of New Zealand’s north have been forced to swim to escape from their flooded homes as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle.

Due to the storm’s devastation, the government declared a national state of emergency for only the third time in history on Tuesday.

According to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, this is New Zealand’s worst meteorological catastrophe in a century.

On Tuesday, officials said that at least 225,000 individuals were without power.

A firefighter who was caught in a landslide in Muriwai, west of Auckland, remains missing. A second firefighter was badly hurt, according to emergency officials.

Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel, and Northland are among the worst-affected coastal villages in the far north and east of the North Island.

Almost a third of New Zealand’s 5,1 million inhabitants reside in affected regions.

Marcelle Smith, whose family resides in a cliff-front home at Parua Bay on the east coast of the North Island, reported to the BBC that she and her two small children had moved to higher ground on Monday night.

Her spouse remained behind to secure the family’s residence. On Tuesday, several constructed embankments had already been swept away, and they were still battling severe weather.

“We are making every effort to safeguard the endeavours in which we have invested our life. Man vs nature at the present time “She stated to BBC.

According to local media, some inhabitants of Hawke’s Bay were forced to swim through bedroom windows to escape their flooded homes. The local populace has been informed that they may be without electricity for weeks.

Aerial photographs of waterlogged regions revealed stranded individuals on rooftops awaiting help.

The extensive damage includes uprooted trees, bent streetlights and utility poles, and row after row of flooded residences.

The New Zealand Defense Force released dramatic photographs depicting the rescue of a sailor whose yacht was washed out to sea when its anchor chain snapped due to severe winds. Authorities reported that it was located off Great Barrier Island following an overnight search expedition.
