World War II singer and ‘forces sweetheart’ Dame Vera Lynn dies at 103

A handyman’s little girl, Vera Margaret Welch was conceived on March 20, 1917, in London’s industrial East Ham neighbourhood. 

She took her stage name from her grandma’s original last name. She began singing in social clubs at age seven and dropped out of school by 11 when she started visiting Britain with a voyaging theatrical presentation. By 17 she was a band vocalist, and at 21 — when the war began — she was a known entertainer. 

During the war, her practical appeal helped troopers to remember the ones they deserted. 

“I was someone that they could connect with,” she once told The Associated Press. “I was a standard young lady.” 

Since her show legitimately followed the Sunday nightly news – a pined for space – Lynn once pronounced: “Winston Churchill was my initial demonstration.”
