Tesla Shares Plummet Over 9% as EU and UK Sales Decline Sharply

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea), Tesla’s sales in January 2025 fell by over 45% across the EU, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the UK

Shares in electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla fell more than 9% on Thursday after the company reported a significant decline in sales across the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK).

The slump pushed Tesla’s valuation back below the $1 trillion mark for the first time since November 2024, reflecting growing concerns about the company’s position in an increasingly competitive market.

Sales Drop Amid Rising Competition

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea), Tesla’s sales in January 2025 fell by over 45% across the EU, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the UK.

Within the EU alone, the drop exceeded 50%, highlighting the automaker’s struggles in key European markets. This decline contrasts sharply with the broader EV market in Europe, which grew by more than a third during the same period.

Industry analysts attribute Tesla’s sales drop to intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers, particularly BYD.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, pointed out that BYD’s market share has surged in Europe, partly due to its competitive pricing and the inclusion of advanced features as standard, while Tesla offers similar features at an additional cost.

“Tesla is facing serious headwinds in Europe, as newer, more affordable alternatives from Chinese manufacturers continue to gain traction,” Mould said.

“BYD, in particular, has been aggressively expanding, offering high-tech features without extra charges, which appeals to price-conscious consumers.”

Musk’s Political Stance a Possible Factor

In addition to commercial challenges, analysts suggest that Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political views may be impacting the company’s brand image and sales.

Musk has been vocal in his support of far-right political figures in both the US and Europe, which has drawn criticism from some consumers.

Musk has openly backed Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, congratulating its leader following a strong electoral performance.

In the UK, he has expressed support for jailed far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, and has criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Meanwhile, in the US, Musk has aligned himself closely with Donald Trump, describing himself as the former president’s “first buddy.”

Peter Bardenfleth-Hansen, a former senior director of Tesla’s Europe, Middle East, and Asia division, told the BBC that Musk’s political engagements could be alienating a segment of Tesla’s traditional customer base.

“There’s no doubt that his flirtation with right-wing politics and his recent media antics—like running around on TV with a chainsaw—are damaging his public image,” Bardenfleth-Hansen said. “He may be appealing to a niche audience, but those aren’t the people buying Teslas.”

Market Uncertainty and Investor Concerns

Beyond sales performance and brand perception, broader economic factors may also be weighing on Tesla’s stock.

Concerns over interest rate policies, as well as uncertainty surrounding potential tariffs under a second Trump administration, have contributed to investor unease.

Despite Tesla’s previous stock surge following the US presidential election, some analysts question the long-term benefits of Musk’s ties to Trump.

The former president has expressed skepticism toward EVs and has pledged to roll back government incentives aimed at promoting their adoption.

“How anybody thought this was going to be good for Tesla, I don’t know,” Mould said, referring to Musk’s alignment with Trump.

As Tesla navigates these challenges, the company faces mounting pressure to stabilize sales and reassure investors.

With intensifying competition, political controversies, and economic uncertainties all playing a role, the road ahead for Tesla appears increasingly complex.
