Mario Draghi, ex-ECB chief, invited to talks with Italian president

Mario Draghi, the former head of the European Central Bank, has been invited to a Wednesday interview with Italy’s president in a bid to determine the country’s political crisis.

President Sergio Mattarella said he is hoping for a non-political party to be rapidly formed to lead Italy through the coronavirus pandemic.
After talks regarding changing the governing coalition led by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte collapsed on Tuesday.

Mattarella said Italy can’t afford to suffer in a months-long campaign and early political election as a “crucial moment” of the pandemic.

He requested all political parties in parliament to support what he called a non-political government.

Mattarella didn’t say who he forces tap to lead that government. But then somebody would likely be highly regarded and considered by parties to be above the political fray.

Nicknamed “Super Mario″ the 73-year-old Draghi was credited with playing a crucial role in achieving Europe’s single currency, the euro if he was the European Central Bank’s president.

The pandemic has killed Italy’s long-stagnant economy and left the country with Europe’s second-highest COVID-19 dying toll.

During the last-ditch treatments that failed Tuesday, the parties in everything is now Conte’s caretaker government argued over European Union pandemic aid and other key policy issues that were checking the form of a more solid alliance.
