Lando Norris etched his name into Formula 1 history on Sunday by winning his first World Championship after a gripping season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The McLaren driver emerged victorious from a tense three-way title fight involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and his own teammate, Oscar Piastri, becoming the first British champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020.
The championship decider went down to the final race of the season, with Norris arriving in Abu Dhabi holding a narrow advantage. He led Verstappen by 12 points and Piastri by 16, leaving little margin for error under the Yas Marina lights.
Verstappen started from pole position, with Norris alongside him on the front row and Piastri lining up third, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown.
Verstappen, the defending champion, dominated the race to claim victory for Red Bull. However, Norris delivered a composed and controlled drive, finishing third behind Piastri, who secured second place.
That result proved decisive, allowing Norris to finish the season just two points ahead of Verstappen in the final standings. Piastri ended the year third overall, 13 points adrift of his McLaren teammate, after also mounting a serious title challenge.
As Norris crossed the finish line, emotions spilled over inside the McLaren garage. The team’s motorhome erupted in celebration, with McLaren CEO Zak Brown delivering a heartfelt message over the radio. “Lando, this is Zak from McLaren.
Is this the world champion hotline? You did it! You did it! Awesome,” Brown said, capturing the magnitude of the moment.
Overwhelmed, Norris laughed, cried, and struggled to find words. “Oh my God, thanks so much. I love you guys. Thanks for everything,” he replied before breaking down in tears. He remained seated in his car for several moments after the race, visibly emotional, soaking in the reality of his achievement.
The 26-year-old later shared an emotional embrace with his parents trackside before celebrating with McLaren’s engineers and mechanics, acknowledging the collective effort behind his title triumph. The victory also denied Verstappen a fifth consecutive world championship, ending Red Bull’s recent dominance at the top of the sport.
Norris’s championship marks a milestone not only for his career but also for McLaren, which has worked steadily to return to the front of Formula 1. His calm performance under immense pressure in Abu Dhabi underlined his maturity and resilience, traits that have defined his rise to the pinnacle of motorsport.
With a new champion crowned and McLaren back on top, the 2025 Formula 1 season will be remembered as one of the most dramatic and competitive in recent history.
