Kyiv Reels as Overnight Russian Strikes Ignite Fires, Injure Dozens

Kyiv endured a wave of Russian drone and missile strikes overnight, leaving multiple residential blocks damaged, at least 16 people injured and emergency crews battling fires across the capital amid renewed frontline pressure

Kyiv was struck by a massive wave of Russian drones and missiles overnight and into early Friday, leaving at least 16 people injured and causing extensive damage across multiple districts of the Ukrainian capital. Emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish fires and rescue residents trapped in damaged buildings.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the coordinated assault hit at least 11 multi-storey residential buildings across the city. He said five injured individuals had been hospitalised, including a man in critical condition and a pregnant woman.

The strikes triggered a series of powerful explosions that shook the capital as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming projectiles.

Authorities reported fires in both the Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, where falling debris ignited open areas and a non-residential structure. Crews struggled against intense flames as air raid sirens continued to sound, urging residents to remain in shelters.

City officials warned that the scale of the attack could lead to temporary power and water outages. Despite the widespread damage, they emphasised that emergency responders were working rapidly to restore basic services and assess the structural integrity of impacted buildings.

In the wider Kyiv region, Russian strikes damaged critical infrastructure and several private homes. Regional head Mykola Kalashnyk said at least six people were injured, including a 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva who suffered severe thermal burns and required hospitalisation.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported additional strikes in other regions of the country, underscoring what appears to be a renewed surge in Russia’s offensive operations. The assault follows a series of territorial gains by Russian forces in the south, including the capture of several villages in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Over the past month, the Russian Defence Ministry has claimed control over multiple settlements across Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv. Analysts say these advances, though incremental, reflect Moscow’s continued push to stretch Ukrainian defensive lines.

However, Russia’s war of attrition has come at significant cost. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia’s siege of Pokrovsk has been sluggish despite the deployment of elite drone operators and spetsnaz units. The think tank noted that Russia’s commanders have been dispersing forces widely, slowing the pace of operations.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has intensified its own long-range drone campaign targeting high-value military infrastructure inside Russia. These strikes aim to pressure Russian logistics and disrupt command operations as the conflict grinds deeper into its fourth year.

For Kyiv residents, Friday’s barrage was a stark reminder of the persistent threat hanging over the capital. As firefighters and rescue teams continued their work, officials urged the public to follow safety protocols and brace for further potential attacks amid escalating hostilities.
