Heavy Fighting Engulfs Pokrovsk as Russian Forces Push to Encircle City

Intense clashes continue on Ukraine’s eastern front, with Pokrovsk emerging as the epicenter of heavy combat. Russian forces push to encircle the city as Ukrainian troops struggle to hold defensive lines amid growing logistical and manpower challenges

KYIV, Ukraine: The situation on Ukraine’s eastern front has reached a critical point, with the city of Pokrovsk once again becoming the focal point of heavy fighting. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, a staggering 218 combat clashes were recorded in the past 24 hours, with 79 of them concentrated on the Pokrovsk front.

Russian forces have intensified their assaults in the area, pressing Ukrainian defenses that are already stretched thin by manpower shortages.

The General Staff reported that Ukrainian troops repelled 10 Russian attacks on the North Slobozhanshchyna front and in Russia’s Kursk region, where the enemy also carried out 10 airstrikes using 24 guided bombs and 149 artillery barrages.

In the South Slobozhanshchyna sector, Russian units launched 11 assaults near Vovchansk, Bolohivka, and Odradne, attempting to advance toward Bochkove. Fighting persisted along several other fronts, including nine Russian attacks repelled near Stepova Novoselivka and Zelenyi Hai in the Kupiansk direction.

On the Lyman axis, Russian forces conducted 10 offensives near Serednie, Myrne, Shandryholove, Nadiia, and Zarichne, in a renewed effort to breach Ukrainian lines. Eleven more assaults were reported near Yampil, Serebrianka, Vyimka, and Fedorivka on the Sloviansk front.

The Kramatorsk sector also saw intensified clashes, with four attacks launched near Chasiv Yar, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, and Zaliznianske. Meanwhile, 32 assaults were recorded on the Kostiantynivka front near Oleksandro-Kalynove, Shcherbynivka, Pleshchiivka, Yablunivka, and Rusyn Yar.

But the heaviest combat remains centered around Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian troops fought off dozens of Russian advances near Nykanorivka, Pankivka, Sukhetske, Rodynske, and Myroliubivka. The General Staff described the battles as “fierce and continuous,” with Russian forces seeking to exploit weak spots in Ukraine’s defensive perimeter.

Further south, on the Oleksandrivka front, Russian troops carried out 28 assaults near Zelenyi Hai, Filiia, Piddubne, and Verbove. Ukrainian defenders also repelled attacks near Malynivka and Stepove on the Huliaipole and Orikhiv fronts, while four Russian assaults were stopped on the Prydniprovske axis.

According to the Financial Times, the situation around Pokrovsk has deteriorated sharply. Russian reconnaissance units have reportedly infiltrated parts of the city, establishing footholds south of the railway line that splits Pokrovsk in half.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on October 26 that Russia has concentrated a “large portion of its main assault force” against Pokrovsk, deploying significant manpower and firepower in an attempt to encircle Ukrainian troops.

Reports from the front indicate that logistics into Pokrovsk are now fully controlled by drones, forcing soldiers to move on foot over long distances to reach their positions. With both Pokrovsk and nearby Myrnohrad facing growing encirclement threats, this sector has become one of the most volatile and decisive battlefields of the ongoing war.
