Jofra Archer Ruled Out of Ashes After Fresh Injury Blow

England’s Ashes campaign suffered another setback as Jofra Archer was ruled out with a side strain, forcing team changes and raising fresh concerns about fitness, squad depth, and England’s prospects for the remainder of the troubled Australian tour ahead now

Pace bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes series, dealing another heavy blow to England’s faltering campaign in Australia. The 30-year-old has suffered a side strain, ending his involvement in a series already lost by the tourists.

Archer will miss the fourth Test at Melbourne on Boxing Day as well as the fifth and final Test in Sydney in the new year. England confirmed the injury following scans conducted in Melbourne earlier this week.

The Sussex fast bowler had been England’s standout performer in a desperate tour that has seen them slump to a 3-0 deficit after three matches. His absence further weakens an attack already stretched by injuries.

Archer returned to Test cricket in July after a four-year absence caused by persistent elbow and back problems. His comeback had been one of the few bright spots for England in Australia.

Across three Tests, Archer claimed nine wickets and also registered his maiden Test half-century during the third Test in Adelaide. His all-round contribution offered rare resistance in an otherwise one-sided contest.

He produced a memorable spell of 5-53 in Australia’s first innings in Adelaide, his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket for six years. However, he was restricted to just 12.4 overs in the second innings, prompting concerns about his fitness.

England captain Ben Stokes praised Archer’s commitment despite the setback. “The effort that he’s put in over these three games has been exceptional,” Stokes said, dismissing doubts surrounding Archer’s readiness for the tour.

“There were a lot of question marks coming out to Australia, and he’s put in a great effort for the team,” Stokes added, underlining Archer’s impact despite limited opportunities.

Archer will return to the United Kingdom after the fourth Test for further assessment. A decision will then be taken on his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, starting in February.

England have already lost fellow fast bowler Mark Wood to injury on this tour, further depleting their pace resources. Surrey seamer Matthew Fisher has been called up, while there are currently no plans to add another fast bowler.

For the fourth Test, Gus Atkinson replaces Archer in the XI, while Ollie Pope has been dropped and replaced by Jacob Bethell. England will hope the changes can restore pride as they look to avoid a series whitewash.
