Italian Police Arrest Ukrainian Suspect in Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage

Italian authorities arrested Ukrainian national Serhii K. under a German warrant, linking him to the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. Investigators allege he coordinated parts of the operation, intensifying scrutiny of Ukraine’s possible role in the attack

Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian national suspected of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, reigniting political and diplomatic tensions surrounding one of Europe’s most mysterious security incidents in recent years.

The arrest, which took place on Wednesday evening in the Rimini area, was carried out under a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities. The man, identified by investigators as Serhii K., is accused of helping coordinate elements of the operation that crippled the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in September 2022.

According to German prosecutors, the explosions were carried out by a team linked to Ukrainian special forces. The group allegedly chartered a sailing yacht, the Andromeda, from which divers deployed to the Baltic Sea to plant explosives on the seabed near Denmark’s Bornholm island.

While Serhii K. is not believed to have taken part in the diving, investigators say he oversaw parts of the operation from aboard the vessel.

German magazine Spiegel reported that sources close to the investigation described how the Ukrainian servicemen involved did not consider their actions criminal. Instead, they viewed the strike on the pipeline as a legitimate wartime measure aimed at undermining Russia’s ability to finance its invasion of Ukraine through gas revenues.

Prosecutors in Germany have also uncovered evidence suggesting the sabotage was not a freelance initiative but may have been authorised by the Ukrainian armed forces. This marks a significant shift from initial theories circulated in the West that pointed to possible Russian involvement.

The case has been unfolding slowly but steadily. In 2023, German Federal Prosecutor Jens Rommel issued the first arrest warrant for a diver allegedly involved in the sabotage. That suspect evaded capture after leaving Poland, reportedly tipped off by local authorities, and was able to cross into Ukraine using a vehicle with diplomatic license plates.

The fate of Serhii K. now depends on Italy’s decision over extradition. Law enforcement sources told Spiegel that no final decision has been made on transferring him to Germany. Meanwhile, the German federal police continue to pursue the case, with Rommel confirming that progress has been made in identifying additional suspects.

The political stakes are high. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently denied any role in the Nord Stream blasts, dismissing the allegations as disinformation designed to weaken Kyiv’s international support. Zelenskyy has instead urged world leaders to focus on who benefits from spreading claims of Ukrainian involvement.

The explosions, which ruptured both Nord Stream pipelines at four different points, sparked immediate global speculation in September 2022.

The sabotage knocked out critical energy infrastructure linking Russia and Germany, and while gas exports through the pipelines had already been suspended amid the war in Ukraine, the destruction carried deep symbolic weight.

Nearly two years later, the question of accountability remains unsettled. With the arrest of Serhii K., investigators appear to be moving closer to unraveling the clandestine operation, but the political fallout could prove just as consequential as the investigation itself.
