India’s Enforcement Directorate Expands Investigation into Mehul Choksi’s Family Amid Financial Scandal

India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has broadened its investigation into the financial dealings of Mehul Choksi, with a new focus on his immediate family members. The agency is examining the alleged financial connections of Choksi’s daughter, Priyanka Choksi, and his brother, Chetan Chunnibhai Choksi, in relation to substantial sums of money that may be linked to illicit financial activities.

This move follows the filing of charges against Rohan Choksi, Mehul Choksi’s son, with a special court in India expected to take up the case soon. Legal proceedings are expected to proceed as the investigation deepens.

The expansion of the probe comes amid mounting legal pressure from the United Kingdom, where a UK court recently ordered Mehul Choksi to deposit £800,000 ($1 million) in connection with ongoing legal proceedings. The order places additional strain on Choksi, who is facing several international legal challenges. Sources suggest that Indian authorities are now investigating whether Choksi’s family members or associates have been involved in mobilising funds to cover these overseas legal obligations.

Indian investigators suspect that Choksi may have used complex financial transactions and intermediaries to conceal the origin of certain funds, a method often associated with money laundering. The ED is probing whether such funds were used to cover legal expenses or maintain assets abroad.

Choksi’s arrest in Belgium in connection with extradition proceedings has further complicated matters. While his detention represents a significant step in India’s efforts to secure his return, the legal process remains under close judicial scrutiny in Belgium, and authorities are carefully monitoring the proceedings.

In addition to financial transactions, the ED is reviewing the broader financial network surrounding Choksi and his family. Investigators are looking into whether past associations or political connections were used to delay or block legal actions in India. The agency is analysing records, assets, and corporate connections to determine whether any family members played a role in facilitating or benefiting from these illicit activities.

As the investigation continues across multiple jurisdictions, including the UK and Belgium, legal experts expect further developments in the coming weeks. The investigation remains active, and authorities are determined to track down all individuals involved in this complex financial network.
