The Prime Minister of France, Emmanuel Macron has termed the US-led NATO brain dead. He had made these comments expressing his doubt on the US-led NATO’s security maxim that an attack on an ally is an attack on all.
Surprisingly Macrons comments have come just a month before the NATO’s December 4 summit in London. Despite being a founding member France has not taken part in NATO’s strategic military planning from 1966 to 2009.
He has said that the US would remain an ally but he is not sure about the Article Five collective defence guarantee of NATO’s treaty. Macron told a British weekly “What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO.”
“Second largest military of NATO, US and Turkey have lack of strategic coordination with European allies,” Macron said.
Macron’s comments have been termed as an overreaction by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She said that NATO is not like what Macron has expressed, the French president has used more drastic words to express his views.
While NATO leaders want to project an image of unity at the London summit the Macron’s comments at this time has shown that NATO is not so together and allies have doubt on other allies.
NATO was perhaps one of the most important “in all recorded history.” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, said in Germany.
However, Russia has hailed the comments of Macron terming it as and perfect description of the present state of NATO.
Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote on her social media account “An exact definition of the current state of NATO.”
