Florence Pugh has quickly cemented her place among Hollywood’s brightest stars, but her journey to international fame began in the rolling countryside of Oxfordshire.

Claire Hooper, who taught a young Pugh at Cokethorpe School in Witney during the early 2000s, reflected on her former pupil’s remarkable talent ahead of the actress’s latest release, Marvel’s Thunderbolts.’

Speaking to the BBC, Hooper described Pugh as having “always had star quality” even as a child, recalling how she cast her as Mary in a school nativity play.

“She just had an amazing ability at a young age to completely embody a character,” Hooper said, adding that Pugh even performed with a Yorkshire accent, much to the delight of the audience.

Pugh reprises her role as assassin Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts, teaming up with other antiheroes, including characters played by Sebastian Stan and David Harbour.

Although wide reviews are still pending, early screenings have praised Pugh’s performance, with some critics calling her portrayal “superb” and “the brightest among the cast.”

Speaking at the London premiere, the 29-year-old actress described Thunderbolts as “the movie we all need right now,” emphasizing the film’s focus on mental health and personal struggles. “Everyone is battling their own demons,” she said. “And this is a movie that certainly tackles that.”

Pugh’s rise to stardom is well-documented. Her first major film role came in 2014’s The Falling, starring alongside Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams.

At the time, Pugh was still in sixth form at St Edward’s School in Oxford. She later broke into Hollywood with standout performances in Midsommar, Don’t Worry Darling, and the Oscar-winning epics Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two.

In 2020, Pugh received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women.

Film critic Anna Smith described her as a “talented, versatile actress who makes smart choices,” praising her authenticity and relatability. “She appeals to a wide variety of audiences thanks to balancing superhero movies and sci-fi with thoughtful dramas,” Smith said.

Born and raised in Oxford, Pugh grew up in a creative family. Her father, Clinton Pugh, is a well-known local restaurateur, while her brother, Toby Sebastian, has also pursued a career in acting and music.

According to Hooper, Pugh’s family provided a nurturing environment that allowed her talents to flourish. “They were really, really special children,” she said.

Despite her global fame, Pugh remains grounded. She often speaks openly about the importance of staying true to herself. At the Thunderbolts premiere, she reiterated, “I don’t ever want to be caught out for something that I’m not. Everything I’ve done is 100% me.”

With her return as Yelena Belova in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday already confirmed, and a growing list of acclaimed performances behind her, Florence Pugh’s star shows no sign of dimming. As her former teacher put it, “She’s just got extraordinary talent.”
