Explosion at Serbian Military Plant in Čacak Injures Four, Investigation Underway

The explosion's impact has raised concerns due to the facility's history of safety incidents. In 2021, two significant explosions at the Sloboda plant caused substantial damage to the factory and nearby residential areas, yet the public was not provided with details regarding the causes of those incidents

An explosion rocked a military production facility in the Serbian town of Čacak this morning, leaving four individuals injured, with one in serious condition.

The blast occurred at the Sloboda plant, known for manufacturing pyrotechnic and military equipment. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident, which took place in the factory’s pyrotechnics workshop.

According to local reports by the Belgrade-based publication Blitc, one of the injured individuals is in critical condition and has been hospitalized for further treatment.

The explosion’s impact has raised concerns due to the facility’s history of safety incidents. In 2021, two significant explosions at the Sloboda plant caused substantial damage to the factory and nearby residential areas, yet the public was not provided with details regarding the causes of those incidents.

Local television network TV N1 noted the lack of transparency following the previous explosions, which sparked ongoing public debate about safety protocols at the facility.

Emergency services and investigators are now focusing on determining the cause of the latest explosion. Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic addressed the situation, urging the public not to jump to conclusions about the cause.

“It is important to refrain from speculating at this stage,” Vucevic said, emphasizing that the plant handles hazardous materials requiring strict safety precautions.

His statement, issued through the state news agency Tanjug, acknowledged the potential dangers associated with handling pyrotechnics and other explosive substances.

The Sloboda plant, located in Čacak, approximately 140 kilometers southwest of the capital, Belgrade, plays a key role in Serbia’s defense industry. It manufactures ammunition, military equipment, and other defense-related products.

The repeated incidents at the plant have drawn attention to the safety measures in place for handling dangerous materials.

Authorities are likely to face increasing pressure to provide more information about the safety standards enforced at the facility and any corrective actions taken following previous incidents.

The explosions in 2021 prompted a temporary shutdown of the plant and extensive damage to surrounding properties, but details on the findings from investigations into those incidents have remained undisclosed.

The lack of transparency has fueled speculation about the adequacy of safety protocols and whether sufficient measures were implemented to prevent future incidents.

Today’s explosion is the latest in a series of safety incidents within Serbia’s defense production sector, which has a complex history involving both military needs and industrial hazards.

The government has been criticized in the past for not implementing rigorous safety checks and for failing to keep the public informed about potential risks.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release further information about the cause of the explosion and the measures being taken to ensure the safety of workers and the surrounding community.
