The European Union’s trade commissioner, Phil Hogan, said he was attempting to reset business relations with the United States amid a visit in Washington in January.
“We accepted to adhere to Washington in mid-January to consider the lengthy list of problems creating tension in the connection between the EU and the US. There is no purpose in going into the details of fixing trade burdens unless we agree a line on a fair trade agenda”, said Hogan, who articulated with US trade spokesperson Robert Lighthizer, advanced of their conference next month.
“I will be attempting a reset of the EU/US business connection on matters like charges on steel and aluminium and the warning of US tariffs in response to a digital tax in Europe”, he added.
The two fronts are striving to crack a deal to eliminate overall import duties, and cannot appear to match over farm goods, which the US says must be included.
The US has also forced taxes on European steel and aluminium, as well as to $7.5 billion value of EU commodities over a the Airbus-Boeing conflict. The EU Commission has said that a warning to raise tariffs associated with the Airbus dispute would make an agreement more challenging to finish.
