Denmark’s PM Rejects Trump’s Interest in Greenland, Reaffirms Island’s Sovereignty

According to a statement from the Danish Prime Minister’s office, Frederiksen reinforced the position of Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has consistently maintained that “Greenland is not for sale”

Copenhagen – Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated that Greenland’s future will be determined solely by its own people, rejecting renewed interest from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in acquiring the vast Arctic territory.

Frederiksen made her stance clear during a phone call with Trump on Wednesday, where the leaders discussed Greenland’s strategic significance and broader geopolitical concerns.

According to a statement from the Danish Prime Minister’s office, Frederiksen reinforced the position of Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has consistently maintained that “Greenland is not for sale.”

The conversation underscored Washington’s significant interest in the resource-rich territory, but no resolution was reached on the matter. Both leaders, however, agreed to continue discussions in the future.

Trump’s Renewed Interest in Greenland

Trump, who had previously floated the idea of purchasing Greenland during his first term in office, reignited the issue by sharing a 2019 poll on social media that indicated 68% of Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.

While the poll did not specifically address U.S. involvement in Greenland’s future, Trump used it to support his argument that the territory should reconsider its affiliations.

The U.S. president-elect also did not rule out the use of military action in relation to Greenland, a remark that raised concerns among Danish and Greenlandic officials.

The United States has long expressed interest in Greenland due to its strategic Arctic location and abundant natural resources, including rare earth minerals.

Greenland’s Status and Strategic Importance

Greenland, the world’s largest island that is not a continent, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has extensive self-rule, with its own government handling domestic affairs.

Home to approximately 56,000 people, most of its population resides in small, ice-free areas along the coast. The island holds significant geopolitical importance, particularly as Arctic ice melts, opening new shipping routes and increasing access to untapped natural resources.

The United States already maintains a military presence in Greenland, primarily through Thule Air Base, a key installation for U.S. missile defense and space surveillance. However, the notion of outright U.S. ownership has been consistently dismissed by both Greenlandic and Danish officials.

Broader Diplomatic Discussions

Beyond Greenland, Frederiksen and Trump discussed a range of pressing global issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as relations with China. Frederiksen emphasized the need to bolster Arctic security and highlighted the strong economic and diplomatic ties between Denmark, the United States, and the broader European Union.

While Trump did not publicly comment on the specifics of his discussion with Frederiksen, his previous remarks on Greenland have already sparked debates in Denmark about the future of the island’s governance and international relations. Frederiksen’s firm stance suggests that Copenhagen remains steadfast in its commitment to Greenlandic autonomy, making it unlikely that any U.S. proposal will gain traction.

As discussions continue, the fate of Greenland remains firmly in the hands of its people, despite renewed U.S. interest in the strategically positioned Arctic territory.
