Belgium has witnessed four nuclear incidents this year, all classified as Level 1 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), according to an announcement by the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) on Monday.
Level 1 incidents, while considered anomalies, have no impact on the population, workers, or the environment.
Authorities assured that all cases have been thoroughly monitored, and measures have been taken to prevent recurrence.
Incidents Across Various Sectors
The first incident occurred in July at the Cyclotron Research Centre of the University of Liège.
A radiochemist from IBA, a company specializing in proton therapy and radiopharmaceuticals, was exposed to ionising radiation while handling a radioisotope.
The exposure exceeded the annual dose limits for hands, prompting further investigation and enhanced safety protocols.
In a separate incident on August 7, a malfunction was reported in the diesel generator system of the Doel 4 nuclear reactor.
The issue arose from a mounting error in the transfer system from the storage tank to one of the three diesel generators. The flaw was identified during an earlier inspection and corrected before posing any risk.
The third anomaly, reported on October 4, involved a worker exposed to a radioactive source during an inspection.
Although the exposure was brief and the radiation dose remained within legal limits for the public, FANC has emphasized the need for stricter safeguards to prevent such occurrences.
Most recently, on November 29, a limited amount of radioactive liquid leaked in various rooms of AZ Groeninge Hospital in Kortrijk. The liquid, used in medical applications, was safely contained and disposed of without causing harm.
FANC Ensures Monitoring and Accountability
The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control has been actively involved in monitoring each incident. In its statement, FANC confirmed that the necessary corrective actions have been implemented to address these anomalies.
“We take every incident seriously, regardless of its scale,” FANC said, reiterating its commitment to maintaining Belgium’s robust nuclear safety standards.
Public Reassurance Amid Heightened Awareness
While nuclear safety remains a critical concern, FANC emphasized that Level 1 incidents on the INES scale indicate minor anomalies that do not compromise public safety or environmental health.
Nuclear facilities, hospitals, and research centers across Belgium are required to adhere to strict protocols, and these incidents highlight the effectiveness of monitoring systems in identifying and mitigating risks promptly.
Experts note that such incidents, though uncommon, serve as reminders of the importance of vigilance in sectors handling radioactive materials.
