Amad Diallo’s Late Hat-Trick Seals Manchester United’s Comeback Against Southampton

The win was a much-needed boost for United, who had shown promise in recent encounters against Liverpool and Arsenal but struggled to assert themselves against weaker opposition

MANCHESTER – Amad Diallo delivered a sensational late hat-trick to rescue Manchester United from the brink of humiliation, turning a likely defeat into a thrilling 3-1 victory over Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United, on the verge of suffering a fourth consecutive home league defeat for the first time since 1930, looked lacklustre for much of the match against a struggling Southampton side.

The visitors, who had won just once all season and were coming off a 5-0 home thrashing by Brentford, appeared poised to pile further misery on the Red Devils.

However, Diallo, who recently signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract, emerged as the hero of the night. Initially deployed as a wing-back, the Ivorian was moved into an attacking role in the second half—a decision that proved to be a game-changer.

Diallo’s Moment of Magic

With nine minutes remaining, United were trailing 1-0 after a Manuel Ugarte own goal from a Southampton corner. The hosts had struggled to create clear-cut chances, reinforcing head coach Ruben Amorim’s pre-match concerns about his side’s inconsistency against lower-ranked opponents.

But Diallo single-handedly turned the match around, starting with a determined run into the box. After benefiting from a fortunate deflection, he pounced on the loose ball and fired a low drive past Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to level the score.

Just a minute into stoppage time, the 22-year-old winger showcased his composure and skill again. Latching onto Christian Eriksen’s delicate chipped pass, Diallo executed a perfectly placed first-time finish to give United the lead, sending Old Trafford into raptures.

Moments later, he capitalised on a defensive lapse when Taylor Harwood-Bellis miscontrolled a pass from Ramsdale. The Ivorian reacted swiftly, stealing possession and calmly slotting the ball into an empty net to seal his first senior hat-trick and complete United’s dramatic comeback.

Amorim Praises Diallo, Calls for Improvement

Following the match, United head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledged Diallo’s brilliance but insisted there is still room for improvement.

“He did a great job. But he has a lot to improve,” Amorim said. “He has the same responsibility as every player who plays for Manchester United. He is in a great moment and is having a very good season.”

The win was a much-needed boost for United, who had shown promise in recent encounters against Liverpool and Arsenal but struggled to assert themselves against weaker opposition. While concerns over their inconsistency remain, Diallo’s resurgence under Amorim has been a major positive.

Heartbreak for Southampton

For Southampton, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow. The visitors had performed admirably for much of the game, containing United’s attack and creating dangerous moments of their own. However, their failure to hold onto their lead in the closing minutes meant they left Old Trafford empty-handed.

Despite the late heartbreak, Southampton manager Russell Martin found encouragement in his team’s performance. “It’s tough to take, but we played well for long spells. Unfortunately, moments of quality from Diallo made the difference,” he said.

United’s Next Challenge

With this crucial win, United will look to build momentum as they prepare for their next league fixture. Diallo, now brimming with confidence, will undoubtedly be central to Amorim’s plans as the Red Devils seek consistency in their quest for a top-four finish.
