Danish Family Injured in Austrian Cable Car Accident: Gondola Plummets in Hochoetz Ski Resort

The investigation is ongoing, but initial reports suggest that a tree or branches landed directly on the bracket to which the gondola was attached, causing the tragic accident

In a harrowing incident at the Hochoetz ski resort in Tyrol, western Austria, four members of a Danish family suffered severe injuries when their cable car plummeted approximately 10-12 meters (33-39 feet) after a tree fell on a support cable on Tuesday morning.

The victims, a father, his son and daughter, and their uncle, were part of a group inside the gondola, and their rescue became a challenging operation due to the steep and rugged terrain beneath.

The cable car, known as the Acherkogelbahn, operated smoothly without any apparent technical faults or signs of human error, according to statements from the local police.

The investigation is ongoing, but initial reports suggest that a tree or branches landed directly on the bracket to which the gondola was attached, causing the tragic accident.

The rescue operation, described as extremely difficult by authorities, was impeded by the rugged landscape, making it hard for emergency workers to reach the victims.

Michaela Burger from the cable car company explained, “The gondola crashed in a very stony area, although the rescue chain functioned very well. The rescuers were on site immediately, but the terrain made it very difficult, and the helicopters couldn’t get there very easily.”

The injured family members were winched by helicopter from the scene, with one of them transported to a hospital in Innsbruck with life-threatening injuries.

The severity of the injuries underscores the gravity of the incident, leaving the family and their loved ones in a state of shock and grief.

In addition to the Danish family, two German citizens in another gondola also suffered injuries due to the vibration caused by the cable car accident. As of now, their condition remains unknown.

The Acherkogelbahn cable car had dozens of other gondolas attached to the support cable at the time of the accident, yet none were affected by the crash.

Authorities are working to understand the circumstances that led to the tree falling on the support cable, causing this tragic event.

District police commandant Hubert Juen emphasized the rarity of such incidents, stating that either a tree or branches landed directly on the bracket to which the gondola was attached.

The investigation will delve into the root cause of this unexpected occurrence, exploring factors such as weather conditions, maintenance protocols, and the health of the surrounding vegetation.

The ski resort community, as well as the wider public, expresses its sympathy and support for the affected families. Local authorities are providing counselling services to witnesses and those involved in the rescue efforts.

As the investigation unfolds, questions linger about the safety measures in place and whether additional precautions should be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The cable car company and relevant authorities assure the public that a thorough examination will take place to ensure the safety of all visitors to the Hochoetz ski resort.

In the wake of this tragic cable car accident, the community mourns, and efforts to support the affected families and improve safety measures are at the forefront of everyone’s minds.
