Snow and Ice Grip UK as Prolonged Arctic Cold Begins

The UK faces widespread snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures as Arctic air sweeps across the country, prompting amber warnings in Scotland, yellow alerts elsewhere, and concerns over travel disruption, power outages and heightened health risks

Snow and ice are expected to sweep across the UK on Friday as forecasters warn that the start of 2026 will bring a prolonged spell of very cold weather. Arctic air moving south is set to push temperatures well below average, increasing the risk of snow showers and widespread ice.

The Met Office has issued amber snow warnings for large parts of Scotland from midday on Friday, while yellow warnings for snow and ice are already in place across much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Forecasters say the conditions could cause significant disruption nationwide.

Scotland is expected to bear the brunt of the severe weather, with up to 40 centimetres of snow possible in some areas. The amber warnings are currently due to remain in force until midday on Saturday, reflecting the heightened risk to transport, power supplies and public safety.

Areas likely to experience blizzard conditions include Angus, Perth and Kinross, Grampian, Aberdeenshire, Moray and parts of the Highlands. The Met Office warned that strong winds combined with heavy snow could lead to whiteout conditions and stranded vehicles.

In England and Wales, snowfall is expected to be lighter but still disruptive, with as much as five centimetres forecast in some regions. Yellow warnings for snow and ice came into force at midnight on Thursday and will remain until midday on Friday.

Northern Ireland is also under a yellow warning until 10:00 GMT on Friday. Forecasters say icy roads and pavements will pose risks to drivers and pedestrians, particularly during the early morning hours.

The Met Office has cautioned that delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely, along with difficult driving conditions and possible power cuts. Motorists are being urged to avoid unnecessary journeys and to check travel updates before setting off.

Scotland’s gritter and snowplough fleet has been deployed across the road network, with vehicles bearing traditional names such as Sir Andy Flurry, Robert Brrrns and Plougher O’Scotland working to keep major routes open.

Met Office forecaster Neil Armstrong said the cold spell could last well into next week. He warned that wintry hazards would continue, with further weather warnings likely as freezing temperatures persist.

Cold Arctic air flowing across the UK is expected to keep daytime temperatures low and nights particularly bitter. The extended nature of the cold increases the risk of ice forming on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Health authorities have also raised concerns about the impact of the cold weather. Amber cold health alerts issued by the UK Health Security Agency cover the whole of England, warning of increased risks to elderly and vulnerable people.

The alerts highlight a potential rise in deaths linked to cold conditions, as well as challenges for hospitals and care homes. Lower temperatures can cause indoor conditions to fall below recommended levels, increasing health risks for patients and residents.

The UKHSA also warned that many households may struggle to maintain indoor temperatures at the recommended 18 degrees Celsius, particularly amid rising energy costs. Cold homes can exacerbate existing health conditions and increase hospital admissions.

People are being advised to plan journeys carefully and to prepare for possible delays. Drivers are urged to pack essentials such as warm clothing, water, blankets and ice scrapers in case they become stranded.

Weather officials stress that forecasts may change as the system develops. The public is advised to stay informed through official channels, including the BBC Weather website and app, as the UK braces for the harsh start to the new year.
