Gold Outlook 2026: Can the Precious Metal Extend Its Record-Breaking Rally?

After a historic year in which gold shattered records and surged over 60%, analysts are divided on whether the metal can sustain its upward momentum in 2026 as economic uncertainty, policy shifts, and global demand continue to shape its trajectory

Gold Enters 2026 on Strong Footing but Big Questions Remain

Gold’s spectacular 2025 rally, which sent prices soaring more than 60% and delivered over 50 record-breaking highs, has left investors wondering whether the precious metal can maintain its momentum into 2026.

The surge, fuelled by geopolitical friction, heavy central bank buying, rate cuts, and a weakening US dollar, made gold the best-performing major asset of the year.

According to the World Gold Council (WGC), gold’s ascent was uniquely broad-based. Geopolitical tensions contributed roughly 12 percentage points to year-to-date gains, with dollar weakness and softer interest rates adding another 10. Investor positioning, economic growth, and persistent central bank demand rounded out the drivers that shaped the metal’s extraordinary rise.

Looking ahead, the WGC forecasts a year of more modest performance. With gold now considered “fairly valued,” real interest rates stabilizing, and 2025’s strong momentum fading, the Council expects the metal to trade within a narrow –5% to +5% range in its baseline scenario for 2026. But its alternative scenarios paint a vastly different picture.

In a mild economic slowdown, gold could rise by 5% to 15% as investors seek defensive assets. A deeper downturn — the so-called “doom loop” — could push prices up 15% to 30% amid aggressive monetary easing and declining Treasury yields.

Conversely, a growth rebound driven by the Trump administration’s policy agenda could push gold down by 5% to 20% as yields and the dollar strengthen.

Despite the WGC’s tempered outlook, major Wall Street banks are forecasting continued gains. J.P. Morgan Private Bank predicts gold could climb to $5,200–$5,300 per ounce, citing robust demand and persistent macro risks.

Goldman Sachs forecasts around $4,900 by year-end, while Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley also anticipate elevated prices, albeit with warnings of volatility.

A key factor behind this optimism is sustained central bank accumulation, especially in emerging markets, alongside concerns that institutional investors remain underexposed to gold. Expectations of lower real yields and rising geopolitical uncertainty further support bullish sentiment.

Still, risks loom. A stronger US recovery or stickier inflation could delay rate cuts, strengthening the dollar and depressing gold. A slowdown in ETF flows, reduced central bank purchases, or increased recycling — particularly in India — may also weigh on prices.

While a repeat of 2025’s extraordinary surge is unlikely, gold enters 2026 with solid fundamentals. Its role as a hedge against volatility and an anchor in uncertain times remains firmly intact, even if the rally’s next chapter may be more measured than meteoric.
