Greenlanders Protest Against Trump’s Renewed Push for US Control

The protests erupted just days after the center-right Demokraatit party, led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, secured the largest share of votes in the country’s parliamentary elections. The party has taken a firm stance against external interference, particularly from the United States

Nuuk, Greenland – Hundreds of Greenlanders took to the streets on Saturday to protest against US President Donald Trump’s persistent attempts to assert control over the Arctic island.

Demonstrators, waving Greenland’s flag and holding placards with slogans such as “Respect Greenland’s sovereignty” and “We are not for sale,” gathered in the capital, Nuuk, as well as in other towns across the island.

The protests erupted just days after the center-right Demokraatit party, led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, secured the largest share of votes in the country’s parliamentary elections. The party has taken a firm stance against external interference, particularly from the United States.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, citing its strategic significance for the United States.

During a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday, Trump reiterated his position, stating, “I think it will happen.”

He argued that Denmark is geographically distant from Greenland and suggested that the US would be better suited to oversee the island’s affairs, given its military presence there.

Greenland’s population of around 57,000, predominantly indigenous Inuit, has been vocal in rejecting Trump’s ambitions. Greenland’s political leaders issued a joint statement condemning his remarks, asserting that the island’s sovereignty was non-negotiable.

The statement, endorsed by all five parties in the Greenlandic parliament, declared that they “could not accept the repeated statements on annexation and control of Greenland.”

The leaders described Trump’s approach as “completely unacceptable” and reaffirmed their commitment to Greenland’s autonomy. Mute B. Egede, Greenland’s outgoing prime minister, called Trump’s comments “unacceptable” and emphasized that Greenlanders wanted to determine their own future.

Egede, a long-time advocate for full independence from Denmark, stressed that Greenlanders identify as “Greenlanders” and do not seek to become part of the US or remain under Danish rule indefinitely.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the newly elected leader of the Demokraatit party, echoed these sentiments. His party’s election manifesto clearly states: “Greenland is not for sale. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.” He reiterated that Greenland must have the freedom to decide its own destiny without external pressures.

Denmark’s response to Trump’s renewed claims was equally firm. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen dismissed the US president’s statements, underscoring that international law and NATO treaties prohibit any forced annexation of Greenland.

“Greenland’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation,” Rasmussen asserted, adding that Denmark continues to support the island’s autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Greenland’s geopolitical significance has drawn increasing interest from global powers, given its vast mineral reserves and strategic position between North America and Russia.

While the island relies on financial support from Denmark, the push for greater economic self-sufficiency has been growing. Some Greenlandic leaders have advocated for controlled mining projects to boost the economy while ensuring environmental protection.

Despite mounting external interest, Greenland’s citizens and leaders remain steadfast in their determination to control their own future.

The protests on Saturday sent a clear message: Greenland is not for sale, and its people will continue to resist any attempts to undermine their sovereignty.
