Nurse Lucy Letby Convicted of Murdering 7 Babies on Neonatal Unit

Nurse Lucy Letby, 33, has been found guilty of murdering seven babies on a neonatal unit, cementing her place as the UK’s most prolific child serial killer in modern times.

The shocking verdict was reached after a lengthy trial that began in October 2022. Letby was also convicted of attempting to murder six other infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Letby had deliberately inflicted harm on vulnerable infants under her care. Her methods included injecting babies with air, force-feeding them milk, and poisoning two infants with insulin. The disturbing nature of her crimes drew international attention.

Letby’s refusal to appear in the dock for the latest verdicts added an eerie layer to the trial proceedings. The jury delivered their verdicts over several hearings, and these verdicts could only be reported after the jurors were discharged.

Tensions ran high as the jury deliberated for 76 hours before announcing the guilty verdicts. Letby broke down in tears as the foreman read out the verdicts on August 8th, and her emotional distress continued when the second set of guilty verdicts were returned on August 11th. The reactions of those in the courtroom were a mix of shock, sorrow, and disbelief, with Letby’s mother audibly sobbing and expressing disbelief in response to the verdicts.

The prosecution portrayed Letby as a “calculating and devious” individual who manipulated her colleagues to conceal her “murderous assaults.” These disturbing actions were uncovered during a two-year investigation by Cheshire Police, prompted by an alarming rise in deaths and near-fatal incidents involving premature babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Prior to June 2015, the neonatal unit saw fewer than three baby deaths per year.

Letby’s defense team contended that the deaths and collapses were the result of systemic failures in the unit’s care rather than the actions of one individual. This argument was not enough to sway the jury, which ultimately found her guilty of her heinous crimes.

The trial itself was a protracted ordeal, spanning over 10 months and earning its place as one of the longest murder trials in the UK’s legal history. The trial’s conclusion was not without its own emotional turmoil, as the jury was unable to reach verdicts on six attempted murder charges. The prosecution has requested 28 days to consider whether a retrial will be pursued for these remaining charges.

As the judge discharged the jury, he acknowledged the distressing nature of the case and excused the panel from future jury service. Letby is scheduled to be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday. She has communicated through her legal team that she does not wish to attend her sentencing hearing or follow the proceedings via video link from prison, although the reasons for her non-attendance have not been disclosed.

The Ministry of Justice has indicated that legislation to compel convicted criminals to attend their sentencing hearings is under examination. The Lord Chancellor emphasized the importance of victims seeing justice delivered and for society to express condemnation during such hearings.
