UK Ranks Lowest in Children’s Well-Being Across Europe

Jack O’Neill, policy and public affairs manager at The Children’s Society, described the UK’s findings as “unacceptable,” attributing the decline in children’s well-being to a combination of socio-economic inequality, poverty, and a lack of mental health support

The United Kingdom has ranked lowest in Europe for children’s well-being, according to the 2024 Good Childhood Report released by The Children’s Society.

The report reveals alarming figures, showing that 25.2% of UK youth are dissatisfied with their lives, the highest in Europe.

This is well above the European average of 16.6%, a statistic that reflects growing concerns about young people’s mental health and overall life satisfaction.

Countries like the Netherlands, Finland, and Denmark fared much better, with only 6.7%, 10.8%, and 11.3% of 15-year-olds respectively reporting dissatisfaction.

In stark contrast, the UK’s life satisfaction rate is joined by similarly high figures in Poland and Malta, where 24.4% and 23.6% of youth expressed dissatisfaction.

Jack O’Neill, policy and public affairs manager at The Children’s Society, described the UK’s findings as “unacceptable,” attributing the decline in children’s well-being to a combination of socio-economic inequality, poverty, and a lack of mental health support.

The report highlighted that the UK has the largest gap in life satisfaction between advantaged and disadvantaged children, pointing to the detrimental effects of growing inequality on young people.

The economic strain of the cost-of-living crisis has filtered down to youth. “Two in five children and young people were worried about rising prices, showing that concerns over making ends meet are increasing their anxiety,” O’Neill said.

With rising costs for food, housing, and basic needs, many families are unable to afford holidays, extracurricular activities, or even school trips, contributing to the isolation and reduced well-being of young people.

Food deprivation is another concerning issue, with the UK ranking fourth highest in Europe. Over 11% of 15-year-olds reported skipping meals due to financial struggles, a figure linked directly to the increasing poverty many families face.

This deprivation not only impacts physical health but also leads to social exclusion, further affecting the well-being of young people.

In addition to financial hardships, school-related stress is a key driver of dissatisfaction among UK youth.

The report revealed that bullying and academic pressures significantly contribute to the decline in well-being, with the UK ranking second-highest in Europe for bullying rates.

Many students reported feeling unsafe at school, lacking a sense of belonging, and fearing academic failure, exacerbating their mental health struggles.

Mental health services are under significant strain, with over 270,000 children waiting for further assistance after an initial referral.

Long wait times and limited resources have left many young people without the support they desperately need, contributing to worsening anxiety, depression, and life dissatisfaction.

Experts warn that without urgent government intervention, the situation could deteriorate further. O’Neill stressed the need for better mental health support, policies that address child poverty, and school reforms to foster safe and inclusive environments.

Addressing these issues, he believes, is key to reversing the alarming decline in young people’s well-being and life satisfaction across the UK.
