Cal Newsome has spent years cutting the hair of Premier League footballers, but nothing prepared him for the moment he was asked to style Cristiano Ronaldo. The 34-year-old owner of Bull & Co Barbershop in Bridgnorth said the experience was a “whirlwind 24 hours” he would never forget.
Newsome began cutting footballers’ hair in 2019 due to his barbershop’s proximity to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Many of the club’s Portuguese players became regular clients, a connection that would eventually change his career forever.
Through his work with Wolverhampton’s squad, Newsome later began cutting the hair of Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot. As a lifelong United supporter, the opportunity already felt like a professional milestone.
But nothing compared to the message he received from Dalot during the recent international break. “He texted me to say: ‘Do you want to come over to Ireland and cut me and Cristiano for the game against Ireland?’” Newsome recalled.
The match was set for the next day, but he did not hesitate. “I dropped all my plans and went over there. I went to the hotel, cut both their hair, stayed the night, and flew back the next day,” he said.
For Newsome, meeting Ronaldo — one of the world’s most iconic athletes — was both surreal and grounding. He described the Portugal captain as “down-to-earth and cool,” noting that their conversation focused on everything but football.
“When they’re getting their hair cut, it’s almost like a safe space away from football,” he said. Newsome spoke with Ronaldo about family life and the cultural differences he has experienced while living in Saudi Arabia.
When it came to the haircut itself, Ronaldo sought his advice on style. “He asked my opinion whether or not he should buzz it again, go short,” Newsome said.
“I basically said, yeah, I thought it was really cool.”
The trust placed in him by one of football’s biggest stars left a lasting impression.
Newsome described the experience as a “career highlight,” one that would be difficult to top.
Only one other figure, he admitted, could leave him equally star-struck: David Beckham.
The former England captain remains another of his sporting idols.
Newsome now hopes this moment marks the start of even greater opportunities.
“Hopefully one day I’ll be cutting in Hollywood,” he said, reflecting on his ambitions beyond football.
For a barber who once dreamed of working with elite athletes, his unexpected journey to Ireland proved that some dreams can arrive with a single text message — and a very tight schedule.
