FUENGIROLA, SPAIN — Two Scottish men have been shot dead in a suspected targeted attack at a popular beachfront bar in southern Spain, prompting a major police investigation.
The fatal shooting occurred late on Saturday evening at Monaghans Bar, a well-frequented venue on the seafront in Fuengirola, Andalusia.
The attack took place shortly after 11:00pm local time, while the bar was screening the UEFA Champions League final, a high-profile event that had drawn a large crowd of locals, expats, and tourists.
Spanish authorities confirmed that a gunman arrived at the scene in a vehicle, exited wearing a mask, and opened fire inside the premises before fleeing. Both victims, believed to be Scottish nationals, died at the scene. Their identities have not yet been officially released.
Javier Salas, a representative of the central government in Malaga province, told the BBC that the victims were “believed to be Scottish,” and that police were pursuing multiple lines of inquiry. “The investigation is active and being led by the region’s specialist and violent crime unit,” he said.
No arrests have yet been made, but police sources told local media they are not ruling out the possibility that the killings are linked to organised crime.
The Costa del Sol, known for its sunny beaches and vibrant nightlife, has experienced a spate of gang-related violence in recent months, often tied to international drug trafficking and criminal networks.
Regional newspaper Diario Sur reported that surveillance footage and witness statements are being analysed, and police are seeking information on the vehicle used in the attack.
The brazen nature of the shooting—carried out in a crowded bar during a major football event—has shocked residents and holidaymakers in the normally peaceful resort town. Monaghans Bar, with its gold-lettered sign and white facade, is a popular watering hole among British expatriates and tourists.
One British tourist who witnessed the aftermath but wished to remain anonymous described scenes of panic and chaos. “People were diving to the floor, screaming. At first we thought it was firecrackers or something from the football, but then we saw the blood,” they said.
While Spanish authorities have taken the lead on the investigation, Police Scotland confirmed they are aware of the incident but declined to comment on any connection to domestic gang activity. “This is a matter for the Spanish police,” a spokesperson said.
The UK Foreign Office stated it had not been approached for consular assistance as of Sunday, but that its staff were ready to support British nationals should the need arise.
BBC correspondent Guy Hedgecoe noted that this incident follows a series of similar shootings in the region in recent weeks. “There have been several attacks that appear to be linked to organised crime, particularly involving drugs,” he said.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the community in Fuengirola remains on edge, grappling with the shock of a violent act carried out in a typically serene coastal setting.
