Elderly man captured by Spanish police for sending letter bombs

A 74-year-old man has been arrested by Spanish police on suspicion that he sent letter bombs to important people, including the country’s prime minister. The man was arrested in the north of Spain, and he is set to go to court later this week.

Six bombs were sent to different places in Spain, including the official home of PM Pedro Sánchez and the US and Ukrainian embassies.

Most of them were defused, but a worker at the Ukrainian embassy was slightly hurt.

There were also letter bombs sent to the ministry of defence, an air force base, and a company that makes weapons. All of these were related to Spain’s help for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

After the attacks, the National Court of the country began looking into terrorism.

The man was caught in Miranda de Ebro, which is in the northern province of Castile and León. He is said to have some computer skills and was found to be using social networks.

Local media say that the man used to work for the town hall in nearby Vitoria-Gasteiz, which is the capital of the Basque country.

Even though the police think he did it alone, they haven’t ruled out the possibility that someone else was involved.

At the time, people thought that the bombs had something to do with Spain’s strong support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. Moscow said it was wrong to send bombs in the mail.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that investigators have been looking into the Russian Imperial Movement, a group with ties to Spanish far-right groups that is also thought to have ties to Russian intelligence. The US has called it a worldwide terrorist group.

Officials in Spain are said to have said nothing about the report. Spain is not only sending weapons to Ukraine after Russia invaded, but it is also helping train Ukrainian troops and giving them aid.
