Switzerland Takes Bold Leap into Green Hydrogen Future with Axpo’s Flagship Plant

Spearheaded by energy giants Axpo and Rhiienergie, the state-of-the-art plant is poised to revolutionize the nation's energy landscape, offering a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable future

In a landmark move towards sustainable energy solutions, Switzerland has inaugurated its largest green hydrogen production facility in the picturesque Graubünden canton.

Spearheaded by energy giants Axpo and Rhiienergie, the state-of-the-art plant is poised to revolutionize the nation’s energy landscape, offering a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable future.

Located adjacent to the Reichenau hydropower plant in eastern Switzerland, the 2.5 MW hydrogen production plant boasts the capacity to generate up to 350 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the facility not only produces hydrogen but also compresses it, facilitating its seamless distribution to refueling stations and industrial consumers.

The significance of this milestone extends beyond mere production numbers. Christoph Brand, CEO of Axpo, emphasized the pivotal role of hydrogen in ensuring future energy security.

He remarked, “There are still a few hurdles to overcome, but we’re convinced of this green, sustainable, and renewable energy carrier’s potential.”

Echoing this sentiment, Rhiienergie CEO Christian Capaul hailed the plant as an impressive flagship project, affirming his conviction in green hydrogen’s pivotal role in the future energy mix.

Capaul noted, “I’m convinced that green hydrogen will play a key role in our future energy supply.”

The environmental impact of the initiative is profound. The hydrogen produced at the facility is projected to displace the equivalent of up to 1.5 million liters of diesel annually, marking a significant stride towards reducing carbon emissions and combatting climate change.

Axpo’s commitment to driving the hydrogen economy extends beyond Swiss borders. The company is actively exploring the feasibility of large-scale hydrogen production plants in collaboration with partners in Italy, including a 100 MW facility in Sicily and one of Italy’s largest H2 plants in Abruzzo’s Peligna Valley.

Moreover, Axpo’s endeavors aren’t confined to production alone. The company is pioneering hydrogen-powered transportation, collaborating with the SGV shipping company to launch the first hydrogen-powered vessel on Lake Lucerne.

This visionary project underscores Axpo’s dedication to promoting sustainable mobility solutions.

Internationally, Axpo is a key player in the Arve Hydrogène Mobilité (Arv’Hy) project in France, which aims to establish hydrogen refueling infrastructure for vehicles by early 2025.

As Switzerland embraces the potential of green hydrogen, Axpo emerges as a trailblazer, driving innovation and sustainability across borders.

With bold initiatives like the Graubünden plant, the nation paves the way toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future, setting an example for the world to follow.

In the wake of global climate challenges, Switzerland’s commitment to green hydrogen offers a ray of hope, signaling a transformative shift towards a more sustainable tomorrow.
