Swiss Railways to Launch Night Train Linking Basel with Malmö via Germany and Denmark

Starting April 2026, Swiss Railways will operate a tri-weekly night train between Basel and Malmö via Germany and Denmark, providing travelers with a convenient, sustainable, and scenic journey across Northern Europe

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has revealed full details and pricing for its long-awaited night train service connecting Basel to Malmö, set to launch on April 15, 2026. The new EuroNight route will run through Germany and Denmark, offering passengers a comfortable and sustainable travel alternative across Northern Europe.

According to SBB, the night train will operate all year round, three times a week in both directions. Departures from Basel SBB are scheduled for every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 5:35 p.m., with arrival in Malmö at 9:35 a.m. the following day.

The return journey from Malmö will depart on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 6:57 p.m., reaching Basel at 11:30 a.m. the next morning.

Covering approximately 1,400 kilometers, the route will include stops in five German cities and five Danish cities, offering multiple boarding and drop-off options for passengers.

Though the full list of stops has not been disclosed, the service is expected to link major hubs such as Hamburg and Copenhagen, enhancing cross-border rail mobility between Central and Northern Europe.

The EuroNight train will feature around 350 seats divided among sleeping cars, couchette cars, and standard seated cars. SBB said the design aims to balance comfort and affordability while catering to a wide range of travelers—from budget-conscious passengers to those seeking privacy and luxury.

Ticket prices will follow a dynamic pricing model, influenced by demand, occupancy rates, and refund conditions. “It’s worth booking early and traveling during the off-season because prices are lower when the train is less full,” the company advised.

Standard seats will start at 38 Swiss francs for one-way travel, while couchette berths begin at 53 francs for a six-berth compartment and 62 francs for a four-berth option. Passengers seeking privacy can book an entire compartment for 224 francs.

For greater comfort, sleeping cars will start at 86 francs for a three-berth compartment and 95 francs for a two-berth. A private cabin will be available from a minimum of 129 francs. Prices for intermediate stops will vary depending on distance.

The introduction of the Basel–Malmö service marks another step in SBB’s growing network of international night trains. The initiative supports Europe’s push for more sustainable transportation alternatives, as night trains make a comeback amid rising environmental concerns about short-haul flights.

SBB’s expansion aligns with other European rail operators’ efforts to revive overnight routes that connect major cities across the continent. Similar projects include ÖBB’s Nightjet services, which have seen increasing demand since their relaunch in recent years.

With this new connection, Swiss Railways aims to strengthen eco-friendly tourism and business travel between Switzerland, Scandinavia, and Northern Germany. The company described the route as “a bridge linking diverse cultures and landscapes, allowing passengers to wake up to new horizons.”

Travelers can expect tickets to go on sale in early 2026, a few months before the official launch of the Basel–Malmö EuroNight service.
