SWISS Airbus A220 Returns to Zurich After Emergency Landing in Graz

Over recent days, mechanics fitted the jet with a replacement engine, transported to Graz by land. “The aircraft is now undergoing comprehensive checks and tests at Zurich Airport,” a SWISS spokesperson told Keystone-SDA

The Airbus A220-300, registration HB-JCD, returned to Zurich on Thursday after an emergency landing in Graz last month due to severe engine issues.

According to Flightradar24, the aircraft departed Graz shortly before 3:30 PM and landed safely in Zurich at 4:54 PM. SWISS confirmed the aircraft’s return following extensive repairs.

Over recent days, mechanics fitted the jet with a replacement engine, transported to Graz by land. “The aircraft is now undergoing comprehensive checks and tests at Zurich Airport,” a SWISS spokesperson told Keystone-SDA.

These include a system evaluation and an uncrewed test flight. The timeline for the jet’s return to passenger service remains uncertain, but plans are underway to equip the cabin with new carpeting and seat covers.

Emergency Landing and Tragic Fatality

The incident occurred on December 23 during a SWISS flight from Bucharest to Zurich with 74 passengers and five crew members aboard. Engine failure and smoke in the cockpit and cabin forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Graz, Austria.

Tragically, one crew member who sustained serious injuries during the flight succumbed a week later in the hospital. In total, 12 passengers and four crew members received temporary medical treatment following the emergency landing.

The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB) released a preliminary report on the incident, revealing that smoke had developed in the aircraft and the left engine sustained severe damage.

The detailed findings aim to shed light on the circumstances leading to the engine failure and the smoke event.

Aircraft Safety Measures

The replacement engine and subsequent checks mark a significant milestone in the aircraft’s recovery process. “Safety remains our highest priority,” emphasized the SWISS spokesperson.

The test flight and technical inspections are expected to verify the jet’s readiness for operational use, ensuring passenger and crew safety.

This incident also highlights ongoing challenges with engine reliability. SWISS previously grounded three Airbus A320 aircraft due to engine concerns, underscoring the importance of robust maintenance and inspection protocols.

The Graz incident prompted swift action from the airline and regulators to address the potential risks and minimize future occurrences.

Cabin Updates Reflect SWISS Commitment

In addition to mechanical repairs, SWISS is enhancing the aircraft’s cabin by replacing carpeting and seat covers.

These upgrades reflect the airline’s broader commitment to maintaining its fleet’s standards and ensuring passenger comfort upon the aircraft’s return to service.

Industry Impact

The incident underscores the complexities of aviation safety and operational resilience. SWISS continues to collaborate closely with authorities and Airbus to investigate and address the technical issues.

While the tragic loss of a crew member casts a shadow over the event, the airline remains focused on bolstering safety protocols and restoring confidence in its operations.

As the investigation progresses, aviation experts and regulators are keenly observing the outcomes to inform broader safety measures across the industry.

Meanwhile, SWISS passengers eagerly await the return of the Airbus A220-300 to regular service, fully restored and ready to soar once again.
