Stockholm — An office of Israeli military technology company Elbit Systems in Gothenburg was the target of a shooting on Thursday, according to local media reports. Swedish police confirmed that no injuries were reported following the incident, which has heightened concerns over the safety of Israeli interests in Sweden amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.
Police officials stated they responded to a shooting directed at an “Israeli object” in Kalleback, a district in the coastal city of Gothenburg, located in southwestern Sweden. A spokesperson for the police, Fredrik Svedemyr, indicated that several patrol units and a helicopter were deployed to the scene to ensure public safety.
A young suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, with newspaper Aftonbladet reporting that the individual is under the age of 15. In light of the incident, police have initiated an investigation into potential charges of “attempted murder” and “aggravated weapons crime.”
Elbit Systems, known for its unmanned aerial systems and defense technology, refrained from commenting on the incident, citing ongoing investigations. Sweden’s security landscape has become increasingly complex, as the national intelligence agency, Sapo, disclosed in May that Iranian entities were allegedly recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to execute acts of violence against Israeli interests. In response to the ongoing threats, police reiterated their commitment to enhance security protocols surrounding Israeli and Jewish community institutions, especially following a second shooting at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm and twin blasts suspected to involve hand grenades near the Israeli embassy in Denmark.
