Seven charged for heist at Lupin sets

An armed heist was staged last month on the French set of the hit Netflix series ‘Lupin,’ and seven people have been charged. According to a Netflix spokeswoman, some twenty masked robbers attacked the film team by launching fireworks at them.

During the crime, they stole almost €300,000 (£250,000; $330,000) worth of equipment in broad daylight.

There were no injuries among the cast or crew on set, including the show’s star Omar Sy, according to reports.

The crew was attacked while filming in the Nanterre district, west of central Paris, forcing a brief pause in the production.

According to Agence France-Presse, the seven suspects, aged 13 to 21, now face allegations of armed robbery as part of an organised gang and receiving stolen items.

Three of them are being held in custody, while the other four are being monitored by the courts. Police said they’re still on the lookout for more assailants, though they have recovered some of the stolen property.

The drama follows professional thief Assane Diop, who is played by Omar Sy, and is based on the fictional French master of disguise Arsène Lupin.

The first season of the show, which aired last year, was seen by millions of people around the world and is the first French series to be so popular on Netflix.

This year, Lupin isn’t the only high-profile Netflix show to be targeted by burglars.

The day before the Paris theft, burglars stole more than 200 antique props off the set of the TV series The Crown in South Yorkshire, England.

A duplicate of a Fabergé egg belonging by the Queen’s grandfather George V in 1933 was among the stolen treasures, which were valued at much to £150,000.
