Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the 2024-2025 Champions League campaign, with a commanding 3-0 victory over French side Brest.
The highlight of the match came from Robert Lewandowski, who became only the third player in history to score 100 goals in Europe’s premier club competition, joining Cristiano Ronaldo (141) and Lionel Messi (129) at the top of the all-time list.
The 36-year-old striker reached the milestone in the 10th minute after winning a penalty. Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot collided with Lewandowski in the box, resulting in a spot-kick that the Polish international coolly slotted into the bottom corner for his 100th Champions League goal.
Barcelona’s dominance continued as they doubled their lead in the 27th minute. Dani Olmo, who was instrumental throughout the match, scored his first Champions League goal for the Catalan side.
The Spaniard displayed exceptional skill, taking a deft first touch to evade Brest’s Brendan Chardonnet before calmly finishing past Bizot to make it 2-0.
Lewandowski sealed his brace and Barcelona’s victory just after the hour mark. Following a brilliant spin inside the box to create space, he slotted home his second goal of the evening—his 101st in the competition—further cementing his place among Europe’s elite strikers.
Barcelona controlled the match from start to finish, dominating possession with 77% of the ball. Their high press kept Brest pinned in their own half for much of the match, limiting the French side to no shots on target.
Olmo came close to extending the lead in the second half, but his effort was denied by a fantastic clearance off the line from Brest captain Chardonnet.
Brest’s best chance came in the 72nd minute, when Mathias Pereira Lage found the back of the net with a powerful shot past Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving Brest still searching for their first meaningful attack.
In the final stages, substitute Pablo Torre had a golden opportunity to put the game beyond doubt. However, the young midfielder misfired, sending his shot wide of the post when one-on-one with Bizot.
Despite the missed chances, Barcelona’s performance was clinical. Their solid defensive display and fluid attacking play earned them their fourth win in five matches, taking them up to second place in the group stage standings.
With Lewandowski’s historic achievement and their overall dominance, Xavi Hernandez’s side will be confident going into the rest of their Champions League campaign.
For Brest, the defeat marked another setback in their European journey, as they remain in eighth place in the table with just one point from five games.
Despite the defeat, the French side will be encouraged by their occasional moments of resistance, particularly the resolute defending of Chardonnet, which prevented a heavier defeat.
