Rainfall Boosts Water Reserves in Algarve, but Regional Disparities Persist

This increase, equivalent to approximately 62 cubic hectometers (hm³) of stored water, is a welcome relief following prolonged dry conditions. The recovery has been more significant in the Algarve's Sotavento region, where water levels have surged by 23.4 hm³, compared to a modest 7.5 hm³ increase in the Barlavento region

Recent rainfall in Portugal has helped replenish water reserves in the Algarve region, with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) reporting an increase in water storage from 34% to 41%.

This increase, equivalent to approximately 62 cubic hectometers (hm³) of stored water, is a welcome relief following prolonged dry conditions.

The recovery has been more significant in the Algarve’s Sotavento region, where water levels have surged by 23.4 hm³, compared to a modest 7.5 hm³ increase in the Barlavento region.

These disparities highlight the varied impact of rainfall across different parts of the region, with some areas benefiting more from the precipitation than others.

According to APA’s provisional data, water levels in several key dams have seen notable improvements. In the eastern Algarve, the Odeleite dam is now at 60% of its capacity, holding 77.44 hm³, while the Beliche dam stands at 49%, storing 23.59 hm³, and the Funcho dam at 40%, with 18.86 hm³.

These figures suggest a steady recovery in the eastern part of the region, which has experienced more significant rainfall.

However, the situation is less optimistic in the western Algarve. The Odelouca dam remains at just 33% of its capacity, with 51.87 hm³, while the Arade and Bravura dams are at critically low levels, with 17% (4.77 hm³) and 13% (4.64 hm³) of their respective capacities.

These figures underscore the continuing challenges faced by the western Algarve, where water reserves remain worryingly low despite the recent rains.

Despite these regional differences, the forecast indicates a positive outlook for the coming days. The APA anticipates further increases in water levels as the runoff from rivers continues to flow into reservoirs.

This could provide additional relief for the dams, especially in the western Algarve, which remains in a vulnerable position.

The significant rainfall of recent days has offered a temporary respite for the Algarve’s water reserves, but the region remains at the mercy of unpredictable weather patterns.

Local authorities continue to monitor water levels closely, especially in the dams of the Barlavento region, where water scarcity is an ongoing concern.

As the region heads into the coming months, the ability to manage water resources effectively will be crucial in ensuring that the Algarve remains resilient to future droughts and water shortages.

The recovery in Sotavento is a promising sign, but the situation in the western Algarve serves as a reminder of the uneven distribution of water resources and the need for continued vigilance in water management strategies.
