Putin Admits Russia Should Have Invaded Ukraine Earlier in TV Marathon

Putin began by acknowledging that, with hindsight, Russia should have been more prepared for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which he referred to as a “special military operation”

In his annual end-of-year press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a comprehensive overview of Russia’s geopolitical position, domestic issues, and military strategies, notably highlighting the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The four-hour long session, broadcast live across major state TV channels, painted a picture of a country navigating through turbulent waters on both international and national fronts.

A Delayed Decision: Reflecting on the Ukraine War

Putin began by acknowledging that, with hindsight, Russia should have been more prepared for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which he referred to as a “special military operation.”

The comments came amidst continued military setbacks and growing international pressure on Moscow. He suggested that Russia’s invasion should have been preceded by “systemic preparation” — an indication that, in his view, the military action lacked the proper foresight and coordination that could have made it more effective.

Putin’s remarks also pointed to the longer history of Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, noting that Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014, and pro-Russian forces had sparked a conflict in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

However, the full-scale attempt to seize Kyiv in 2022 marked a dramatic escalation in the conflict, one that has now led to a protracted and devastating war.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Putin reiterated that Russian forces were making daily progress on the frontlines.

He also took a moment to praise the Russian military, calling them “heroes” and showcasing a signed flag from Russian marines fighting in the Kursk region, an area heavily impacted by the conflict.

The war has undoubtedly shifted the dynamics of Russian foreign policy, and Putin framed it as a struggle to defend Russian sovereignty.

He emphasized that this military action had achieved a degree of independence for Russia, especially as Western sanctions have spurred the country to reduce its reliance on foreign allies and markets.

Russia’s Nuclear Doctrine and Escalating Tensions

A significant portion of the press conference was devoted to discussing Russia’s evolving nuclear posture, which has sparked international concern.

Putin stressed the importance of his newly adopted nuclear doctrine, which permits the use of nuclear weapons in response to attacks on Russia or its allies.

According to this doctrine, Russia could launch a nuclear strike in retaliation to a conventional attack, particularly if that attack is supported by a nuclear-armed nation, such as the United States.

The announcement raised the stakes in an already tense geopolitical environment, with Ukraine continuing to fight back against Russian forces, supported by Western military aid, including advanced air defense systems.

Putin also referenced the recent use of Russia’s new intermediate-range ballistic missile, Oreshnik, which was deployed in November in a strike on Ukrainian targets.

The missile’s capabilities, Putin boasted, were formidable, even suggesting that Ukrainian air defenses — powered by US-supplied technology — should attempt to intercept it in a test of its effectiveness.

While Putin appeared confident in his military advancements, he was also careful to maintain a tone of measured diplomacy, suggesting that Russia remained “open to compromises” to end the war.

However, the specifics of these compromises were unclear, leaving room for interpretation about how the conflict might ultimately resolve.

Syria: A Complicated Victory

Another point of discussion was Russia’s involvement in the Syrian Civil War, where Moscow had long supported President Bashar al-Assad’s government militarily.

Putin dismissed the notion that the recent fall of Assad’s regime in Damascus represented a defeat for Russia.

Instead, he called the situation “complicated,” adding that Russia was in talks with Syria’s new rulers to maintain control over two strategically significant military bases on the Mediterranean coast.

Putin’s handling of the Syrian issue underscored Russia’s ongoing role as a key player in the Middle East, even as the region’s political landscape continues to evolve.

The ousted Assad regime’s departure left a power vacuum, but Putin was quick to emphasize that Russia’s interests would continue to be safeguarded through its military presence and diplomatic efforts.

Russian Sovereignty and Economic Realities

In what appeared to be a deliberate theme throughout the press conference, Putin repeatedly emphasized the concept of “Russian sovereignty,” arguing that the invasion of Ukraine was a necessary step in protecting the nation’s independence from external influences.

This message resonated through his remarks on the economy, which he claimed remained “stable,” despite the challenges posed by Western sanctions.

Putin acknowledged that inflation in Russia had reached 9.1%, calling it “alarming,” but he pointed to the country’s higher-than-expected economic growth as evidence that Russia’s economy was weathering the storm better than some Western nations, including Germany.

However, critics argue that Russia’s economic resilience is largely due to its military-industrial complex, which has been the focus of much of the country’s industrial output during the war.

On the domestic front, Putin addressed several issues affecting everyday Russians, including rising prices and the struggles faced by younger generations trying to secure housing.

When asked about the rising cost of everyday goods such as butter, Putin seemed more concerned with the broader economic stability than the specific price fluctuations, though he acknowledged that economic hardship was an ongoing challenge for many.

Russia’s Role on the World Stage

Shifting the focus to Russia’s international relationships, Putin spoke of the country’s strengthened ties with China, claiming that relations between the two countries had reached an unprecedented level of cooperation.

The two nations, he said, were coordinating actions on the global stage in a manner that had never before been seen in their history.

The geopolitical dynamics between Russia and China are increasingly important, particularly in light of Russia’s growing isolation from the West.

Putin’s remarks suggested that Russia sees China not just as a partner but as a key ally in navigating the changing global order, especially as tensions with Western powers continue to escalate over Ukraine and other issues.

Putin and Trump: A Curious Stalemate

The press conference also touched on US-Russia relations, particularly regarding President-elect Donald Trump.

Putin was asked about his views on Trump’s presidency, to which he responded that he had not spoken to the American leader in four years but would be open to meeting with him if Trump desired.

In a lighter moment, Putin quoted American author Mark Twain in response to a question about his political position, humorously saying, “The rumours of my death are much exaggerated,” eliciting laughter from the audience.

The remark appeared to be a playful jab at critics who have portrayed him as weakening in the face of mounting international opposition.

A Tightly Controlled Event

While Putin’s comments provided valuable insights into his views on Russia’s future, the press conference was highly orchestrated, with only select journalists and members of the public allowed to ask questions.

The venue was carefully chosen, with a large blue screen displaying a map of the Russian Federation, which included annexed Ukrainian territories like Crimea and parts of Donbas.

The carefully managed atmosphere was designed to project an image of control and authority, while minimizing any potential challenges to the Kremlin’s narrative.

In conclusion, Putin’s year-end press conference offered a glimpse into his vision for Russia’s future, particularly regarding its ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.

His comments suggested that Russia is committed to asserting its sovereignty, regardless of the cost, and that it will continue to resist external pressures, particularly from the West.

While the war in Ukraine remains far from over, Putin’s statements underscored his resolve to pursue Russia’s objectives, even as the international community watches closely, awaiting any signs of potential compromise or escalation.
