In a surreal and startling scene more reminiscent of a maritime disaster movie than reality, a Norwegian man awoke on Thursday morning to find a 135-metre-long container ship had run aground — stopping just metres from his front door.
Johan Helberg, a resident of the Byneset district near Trondheim, was alerted to the incident by a panicked neighbour around 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT), after the vessel ploughed ashore at full speed.
The vessel, identified as the Cypriot-flagged NCL Salten, was en route southwest through the Trondheim Fjord to the port of Orkanger when it veered dramatically off course.
“The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don’t like to open,” Helberg told Norway’s TV2, recalling the moment his neighbour desperately tried to get his attention.
“I went to the window and was quite astonished to see a big ship. I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal.”
Images of the crash show the green-hulled cargo ship looming over Helberg’s red-roofed home, its massive bow resting partially on land just beyond his garden.
Aerial photos released by the EPA illustrate the sheer size disparity, with Helberg’s house dwarfed by the towering deck of the container ship.
Neighbour Jostein Jorgensen was among the first to witness the unexpected grounding. He said he was jolted awake by the sound of the ship cutting through water and headed directly toward the shore.
“I was sure that [Helberg] was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life. I rang the doorbell many times and nothing,” Jorgensen told TV2. “It was only when I called him on the phone that I managed to contact him.”
According to the AFP news agency, all 16 crew members aboard the NCL Salten were unharmed. No injuries have been reported, and there was no immediate threat of environmental damage from the crash.
Norwegian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. The reasons behind the vessel’s sudden deviation remain unclear, although initial reports confirm that the ship had previously run aground in 2023, managing to free itself without external assistance.
The NCL Salten is operated by the Norwegian Coastal Line and is primarily used for cargo transport across Nordic routes. Built to handle challenging fjord navigation, the incident has raised concerns about the vessel’s guidance systems or human error at the helm.
Standing in the shadow of the ship’s hull, Helberg seemed to take the bizarre episode in stride.
“It’s a very bulky new neighbour,” he quipped to reporters. “But it will soon go away.”
As emergency teams assess the situation and maritime inspectors prepare to determine whether the vessel can be towed or moved under its own power, the residents of Byneset are left with an unforgettable reminder of how close the sea — and its ships — can come to their doorstep.
