McLaren Racing Valued at £3.5bn After Ownership Restructure Boost

McLaren Racing secures £3.5bn valuation following a major restructuring, as Mumtalakat and CYVN Holdings buy out minority investors, marking a significant milestone for the F1 team

McLaren Racing, the iconic Formula 1 outfit, has been valued at around £3.5bn following a major restructuring of its ownership. The shift highlights the team’s revival both on and off the track.

The deal sees Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat and Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings buy out US investment group MSP Capital and other minority shareholders. MSP originally bought a 33% stake in 2020 for £185m, valuing McLaren Racing at just £560m at the time.

This change consolidates McLaren’s ownership under two powerful backers. The valuation reflects not only the team’s resurgence in Formula 1 but also the overall boom in the sport’s commercial appeal since Liberty Media took control in 2017.

McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown hailed the development, calling it a “great day for McLaren.” He emphasized how the simplified structure provides stability after years of financial strain. “It wasn’t long ago our business was extremely challenged. Now, we’re competing at the very front,” Brown told BBC Sport.

The turnaround has been remarkable. Under Brown’s leadership since 2016, and with Andrea Stella as team principal since late 2022, McLaren has re-established itself as a dominant force. The team clinched the constructors’ championship last year for the first time since 1998 and is currently leading both championships in 2025.

Drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have spearheaded this resurgence. Between them, they have won 12 of the 15 races so far this season. McLaren now holds more than double the points of Ferrari in the constructors’ standings, positioning them for a potential title double.

The ownership restructuring also strengthens McLaren’s ambitions beyond Formula 1. The team competes in the US-based IndyCar World Series and has plans to enter the World Endurance Championship in 2027. It recently withdrew from Formula E to focus resources on its most competitive series.

Paul Walsh, executive chairman of the McLaren Group, praised the outgoing minority shareholders, acknowledging their support during difficult years. He stressed that the new ownership positions the team for future growth in motorsport and advanced mobility ventures.

A statement from McLaren highlighted that the streamlined ownership and stronger capital base will ensure continued success both on and off the track. The deal also aligns with CYVN’s wider investment strategy, having already acquired McLaren Automotive earlier this year.

With its financial footing secured and its cars dominating on track, McLaren Racing is now firmly back among the sport’s elite — a far cry from the challenges of just five years ago.
