France elects first female parliament speaker

The first woman to assume the position of lower house speaker in France vehemently defended the right to an abortion on Tuesday and urged the chamber to be “vigilant” in preventing its repeal.

In its first session after President Emmanuel Macron’s party lost the majority in elections last month that gave fresh authority to far-right and far-left parties, the National Assembly chose Yael Braun-Pivet as speaker on Tuesday.

Braun-Pivet is a part of Macron’s centrist alliance Ensemble (Together), which continues to hold the majority of Assembly members but is no longer large enough to pass laws with ease. The assembly is the most powerful chamber of the French legislature.

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to remove women’s constitutional safeguards for abortion last week, the split house is getting ready to take on ideas on combating inflation and enshrining abortion rights in the French Constitution. In 1975, France legalised abortion, and it now has strong political support.

After being elected speaker, Braun-Pivet remarked, “The cruel decision handed down last Friday by the U.S. Supreme Court, that reversed its commitment, that stunned us so much, is a sharp reminder to be vigilant.”

There should be no assuming of anything. Great progress has been made throughout history, yet it is constantly in danger of being undone. This privilege, which was unalienable, was fought for. She told lawmakers, “I am convinced as a woman today that we need to be the watchdog so that it stays in place forever.

Former Socialist Braun-Pivet, who joined Macron’s party in 2016, is a relative newbie to governing. She beat out candidates from other parties in a secret vote.

The largest opposition force in the Assembly is the left-leaning Nupes coalition, whose MPs made a grand entry together on Tuesday with a varied group of other legislators, including many young people who were serving in their first elected positions. Macron’s proposals to slash taxes and raise the retirement age from 62 to 65 are being contested by Nupes.

The National Rally, a far-right organisation led by three-time presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, gained a record number of seats and is anticipated to advance anti-immigration measures.

All three major parties have competing plans to assist working-class people in dealing with the rising inflation brought on by Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.

Since there are still fewer women in the Assembly, Braun-selection Pivet’s was viewed as a significant statement about women in politics. Lawyer Braun-Pivet, who previously served as chair of the Assembly’s Law Committee for five years, was initially elected in 2017 and reelected this month in her district west of Paris. Braun-Pivet spent several years living in Asia.

More so than it has in the previous 20 years, the National Assembly is currently playing a more significant role.

Macron’s supporters are concerned that the new legislature would lead to political stalemate and thwart his aspirations to implement climate legislation and open up France’s economy to foreign investment. His detractors claim that it is more typical of France.

“The French people force us to cooperate, to argue instead of to engage in conflict. Regardless of our disagreements, we all have a duty to respond to this assembly, which serves as the face of France, because they have chosen and elected us, Braun-Pivet remarked.

Sebastien Chenu, a lawmaker for the National Rally, stated that his extreme right party would push for discussions on immigration and “Islamism.”

“We will resist Emmanuel Macron’s policies, like the pension reform in particular, without any concessions,” he declared.

Louis Boyard, a Nupes politician, stated that in the face of excessive inflation, “we must resuscitate the economy through consumerism. by increasing the minimum salary to EUR 1,500. via lowering costs. We have a lot of ideas.”

Two legislators from French Polynesia arrived wearing traditional garb as lawmakers walked through the park into the columned session. However, the assemblage still primarily consists of men in ties and suits.

The National Rally or Nupes may take control of the crucial finance commission, which is in charge of overseeing the state’s budget, when the National Assembly elects committee chairmen in the coming days.

Next week, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne—only the second woman to hold that position—will outline the government’s overarching objectives in a lengthy address and may then be subject to a vote of confidence.
