Figure Skating Community Mourns Loss of Young Athletes and Coaches in Washington DC Plane Crash

The fatal crash, which occurred on Wednesday night, involved an American Airlines commercial flight and a military helicopter, killing all on board. Authorities have so far recovered 28 bodies from the wreckage in the Potomac River

The figure skating world is reeling from a devastating tragedy after a midair collision in Washington DC claimed the lives of several skaters, their families, and esteemed coaches.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Wednesday night, involved an American Airlines commercial flight and a military helicopter, killing all on board. Authorities have so far recovered 28 bodies from the wreckage in the Potomac River.

Among the victims were 16-year-old figure skaters Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, along with their mothers Christine Lane and Jin Han, and two prominent Russian coaches, Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.

All six were associated with a Boston skating club and had been returning from a development camp linked to the recent US Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

“Skating is a very close and tight-knit community,” said Doug Zeghibe, the club’s chief executive, on Thursday. “For all of us, we have lost family.”

US Figure Skating, the sport’s governing body, confirmed that multiple athletes, coaches, and family members were among the passengers. While it did not provide a full list of names, reports suggest that at least 14 of those on board had ties to the sport.

The University of Delaware also confirmed the death of Sasha Kirsanov, a former university coach. “We believe two young skaters who were members of the UD Figure Skating Club were also on board,” the university’s president said, though no further details were provided.

The Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society, along with the Skating Club of Northern Virginia, issued statements expressing their grief but did not release names. Additionally, Russian media reported that former Soviet skater Inna Volyanskaya was among the victims.

Rescue teams are continuing to search the freezing waters of the Potomac River for remaining victims and wreckage, while the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the cause of the collision.

The ill-fated commercial jet carried 64 passengers, while three military personnel were aboard the helicopter. The deaths of Shishkova and Naumov have left a void in the figure skating community.

The duo, who won the 1994 World Championships in pairs skating and later became revered coaches in the United States, were known for their high standards and compassionate mentoring. They leave behind their 24-year-old son, Max Naumov, who followed in their footsteps as a competitive skater.

Nancy Kerrigan, an Olympic medalist and alumna of the Boston skating club, paid tribute to the lost skaters and coaches. “I’ve never seen anyone love skating as much as these two, and that’s why I think it hurts so much,” she said.

For many in the figure skating world, the tragedy brings painful memories of the 1961 plane crash that wiped out the US national figure skating team en route to the World Championships in Prague.

Doug Zeghibe acknowledged the long-term impact of such a loss. “When you lose coaches like this, you lose the future of the sport as well.”

As investigations continue, the figure skating community remains in mourning, grappling with an unimaginable loss that has cast a dark shadow over the sport.
