Europe Holds Steady as Safest and Most Desired Long-Haul Destination

Europe remains the world’s safest and most sought-after long-haul destination this autumn, even as global travel demand dips slightly, according to the latest Long-Haul Travel Barometer (3/2025) by the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail BV.

While 55% of surveyed travellers plan overseas trips between September and December 2025—a four-point drop from last year—38% intend to visit Europe, demonstrating the continent’s enduring appeal amid global uncertainty.

The report highlights diverging trends across markets. Travel intentions to Europe have surged in the United States (up from 23% to 29%) and South Korea (from 27% to 33%), counterbalancing slower momentum from China and Canada.

Chinese interest, while still leading globally at 69%, has dropped sharply from 83% in 2024 as economic caution drives travellers toward shorter regional trips.

Brazil remains a strong source market at 46%, despite affordability concerns, while Australia edges up to 37%. Canada’s share slips to 35% amid economic unease, and Japan’s modest rise to 20% signals a gradual recovery.

ETC President Miguel Sanz emphasized Europe’s unique position: “Safety and stability remain Europe’s strongest advantages in an uncertain world. Affordability must be addressed if we are to keep Europe accessible to younger generations.”

The research reaffirms that Europe ranks highest globally for safety—across political stability, personal security, and low risks of conflict or terrorism. These factors continue to outweigh others, such as attractions or infrastructure, in travellers’ decision-making.

However, affordability remains a significant barrier. Forty-two percent of respondents cite cost as the main deterrent, particularly among younger travellers (61%). Most plan to spend €100–€200 per person daily, with fewer willing to exceed €200 compared to 2024. The share of high spenders in China and Brazil dropped from 38% to 25% and 45% to 38%, respectively.

Among destinations, Europe’s favourites—France, Italy, the UK, Germany, and Spain—retain their dominance. Yet the Nordics are gaining momentum: Norway’s interest climbed from 9% to 12%, Finland’s from 7% to 10%, and Iceland’s from 5% to 8%, fuelled by demand for nature-driven and seasonal experiences such as the Northern Lights.

Another trend is the rise of multi-country itineraries, with 73% of respondents planning to visit several nations during their European trip. Chinese travellers lead this trend, intending to explore an average of 5.5 destinations, up from 3.8 last year.

Meanwhile, transport preferences are shifting. Travellers are increasingly choosing trains (38%) and cars (32%) for intra-European journeys, while the use of full-service flights has dropped by 18%. The shift reflects growing sustainability awareness and a desire for flexibility—especially among Chinese visitors.

Despite economic headwinds, the ETC report underscores Europe’s resilience. Its combination of safety, stability, and expanding regional diversity continues to attract travellers worldwide, positioning the continent as the top choice for long-haul journeys this autumn.
