Erling Haaland Injury Concern Grows After Norway Nations League Defeat

Norway, Oslo County: Erling Haaland’s injury scare has raised Manchester City concerns ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League trip to Liverpool

Erling Haaland has given Manchester City an injury concern after limping off during Norway’s 2-1 Nations League defeat against Portugal, with the Premier League champions now waiting for further information before Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool.

The striker was replaced in the 67th minute after signalling towards Norway’s bench, prompting immediate concern over his physical condition. Haaland had remained involved in a competitive contest before eventually making way for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Haaland’s fitness will now be closely monitored by Manchester City, particularly because the club faces a demanding trip to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. The forward has already scored seven goals this season.

His potential absence would represent a significant concern for City, given his importance to their attacking threat. The Norway international remains one of the team’s most dangerous goalscorers and has become central to their plans in major fixtures.

City are preparing for their first match since being found guilty of all charges relating to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. The club has lodged an appeal against the findings, adding further attention around Sunday’s fixture.

For now, the immediate priority will be establishing the severity of Haaland’s problem. Manchester City will hope his early departure was precautionary and that he will recover quickly enough to take part against Liverpool.

Norway suffered another setback in the Nations League as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory, leaving the hosts bottom of Group A4 with two matches still remaining in the group stage.

Portugal, meanwhile, strengthened their position at the top of the section and moved six points clear of second-placed Denmark. The reigning Nations League champions also secured their fourth consecutive victory in the competition.

Norway had initially threatened to produce a major result against Portugal after taking the lead in the 36th minute. Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer produced an outstanding finish following Martin Odegaard’s cross.

Ajer controlled Odegaard’s delivery on his chest before striking a superb half-volley from the edge of the penalty area. His effort flew into the top corner, giving Norway a deserved advantage.

Portugal responded almost immediately, however, and levelled the contest only two minutes later. Joao Cancelo produced a spectacular finish from a similar distance after Nuno Mendes launched a long throw into the penalty area.

The quick turnaround changed the momentum of the match and ensured Norway could not protect their lead for long. Portugal regained confidence as the contest became increasingly open during the second half.

Haaland had an opportunity to restore Norway’s advantage but dragged his attempt wide. It proved to be one of his final meaningful contributions before he was withdrawn with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Jorgen Strand Larsen replaced the Manchester City striker, with Norway hoping the substitution would not have serious consequences beyond the international fixture. The forward’s condition will now become a major talking point at club level.

Portugal eventually completed the comeback with 11 minutes remaining when Goncalo Ramos scored the decisive goal. The forward reacted quickly to Joao Felix’s lay-off, stabbing the ball home from close range.

Ramos’ goal completed Portugal’s fourth successive victory in the competition and strengthened their control of the group. Norway were unable to respond despite continuing to search for an equaliser during the closing stages.

Portugal finished the match with 10 players after Francisco Conceicao was sent off in the 87th minute. The winger received two quick bookings for dissent, leaving Portugal to defend their advantage with a reduced side.

The result continued a difficult Nations League campaign for Norway, who have now suffered three successive defeats. Their position at the bottom of the group leaves their remaining fixtures increasingly important.

Portugal’s position is considerably stronger. With six points separating them from Denmark, their qualification prospects have improved significantly, while their winning run has provided further momentum under manager Jorge Jesus.

The match also marked Portugal’s third consecutive game without Cristiano Ronaldo. The country’s record goalscorer left the national camp last week after being dropped, creating considerable attention around his international future.

Jorge Jesus has indicated that he intends to discuss the situation with Ronaldo. The Portugal manager nevertheless left the door open for the veteran forward, saying he could return to the national team if he wanted.

Ronaldo’s absence has therefore become another storyline surrounding Portugal’s impressive run. Despite missing their captain and all-time leading scorer, the European side has continued producing results and now sits firmly at the top of Group A4.

For Manchester City, however, the biggest concern from the evening will be Haaland’s fitness rather than Portugal’s success. The Norwegian forward’s status could have a direct impact on Sunday’s Premier League contest.

A trip to Liverpool represents a major test regardless of Haaland’s availability. City will need their leading attacking players operating at full strength if they are to secure an important result away from home.

Liverpool will also be aware that Haaland’s possible absence could significantly alter City’s attacking approach. The Norwegian’s combination of strength, speed and finishing ability makes him particularly difficult for opposing defenders to contain.

Manchester City will now await medical assessments before determining whether Haaland can recover in time. Any decision will likely depend on the severity of the problem and his response during the days following the international fixture.

With the Liverpool match approaching quickly, City supporters will be hoping the substitution was simply a precaution. A serious injury would provide an unwanted setback at a crucial stage of the season.

Haaland’s seven goals have already underlined his importance to City this campaign, making his availability a central issue ahead of Sunday. The club will therefore be eager for positive news following Norway’s disappointing evening against Portugal.

For Norway, the defeat leaves little room for error in their remaining Nations League fixtures. For Portugal, the victory provides another step towards the knockout stages. For City, though, Haaland’s condition remains the night’s most significant concern.

The striker’s eventual diagnosis will determine whether Manchester City face Liverpool with their preferred attacking focal point available. Until further medical information emerges, uncertainty will surround one of the Premier League’s most anticipated fixtures this weekend.
