ARNHEM, Netherlands — Dutch police have gathered substantial evidence suggesting that a massive fire, which ravaged multiple homes and shops in the city of Arnhem on Thursday morning, may have been deliberately set, according to information obtained by local newspaper De Gelderlander from several independent sources.
The inferno, which erupted during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, engulfed approximately ten shops, residences, and storage spaces in Arnhem’s city centre.
Firefighters battled for hours to bring the blaze under control, finally succeeding by Thursday afternoon. While no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that victims may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Residents were forced to evacuate their homes in haste as thick plumes of smoke and flames spread rapidly. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as people fled, leaving behind personal belongings and livelihoods.
“I woke up to the smell of smoke and saw the sky glowing red. We had to run without thinking,” said a local resident who managed to escape unscathed.
The scale of the destruction is extensive, with charred remains of buildings and debris littering the streets. Emergency services have cordoned off the affected area, preventing displaced residents from returning to assess the damage.
Authorities have intensified their investigation, focusing on the possibility of arson. Sources close to the investigation revealed that individuals were reportedly seen near the site shortly before the fire broke out.
Detectives are currently reviewing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses to identify any suspicious activity.
“Based on preliminary findings, we are seriously considering the possibility of arson,” a police spokesperson said, without divulging further details due to the ongoing investigation.
Forensic experts have been deployed to examine the scene and collect evidence that might shed light on the cause of the blaze.
Local officials have expressed shock at the incident. Arnhem Mayor Ahmed Marcouch visited the scene on Thursday and met with displaced residents, assuring them of the city’s support.
“This is a tragic event for our community. We will do everything possible to uncover the truth and help those affected,” Marcouch said in a brief statement.
Meanwhile, social services have been mobilized to assist those left homeless by the fire, arranging temporary shelter and emergency aid. The city council has also pledged financial assistance to help businesses recover.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has left the residents of Arnhem shaken, with many expressing fears about safety in the area.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as police pursue leads and forensic analyses provide further clarity on what ignited the devastating blaze.
