British Lawyer Dies in Suspected Methanol Poisoning in Laos: Family Mourns ‘Terrible Tragedy’

The family of Simone White, a 28-year-old British lawyer from Orpington, south-east London, has expressed their heartbreak after her death in Laos, a popular destination for backpackers. Ms. White is believed to have succumbed to methanol poisoning after consuming contaminated alcohol in Vang Vieng, a town infamous for its vibrant but risky tourism scene.

Ms. White, described by her family as having “the most wonderful energy and spark for life,” was one of six tourists who tragically lost their lives in recent weeks after reportedly consuming tainted alcohol in the area.

In a heartfelt statement, her parents said: “Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life. She was a soul who gave so much to so many and was loved by her family, friends, and colleagues.” They added that their daughter had been “taken far too soon” and would be “sorely missed by her brother, grandmother, and entire family.”

The statement also extended condolences to other families impacted by the incident: “Our hearts go out to all other families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.”
