Rare Whale Species Spotted Near Cornwall, Experts Investigate

While the trust is working on confirming the species, the excitement surrounding these rare sightings is palpable. The Isles of Scilly, known for its rich marine life, has historically been a location for occasional whale sightings, but the recent report is particularly significant

Wildlife experts are investigating the potential sighting of a rare whale species in the waters off Cornwall, after a series of whale sightings were reported near the Isles of Scilly.

Between December 29 and January 8, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust documented 17 whale sightings in the area, with both minke and humpback whales confirmed among those spotted.

One sighting, in particular, caught the attention of experts: a whale seen swimming between St Mary’s and St Agnes. The charity’s team believes the animal could be a rare species that they are still trying to identify.

According to Jay Cowen, a representative from the trust, the whale could either be a Cuvier’s beaked whale or a northern bottlenose whale.

“These species are typically found in offshore, deeper waters, making it quite unusual to spot them so close to land,” Cowen told BBC Radio Cornwall. “Both of these species are already rare to spot in the UK, and even more so around the Scilly Isles.”

While the trust is working on confirming the species, the excitement surrounding these rare sightings is palpable. The Isles of Scilly, known for its rich marine life, has historically been a location for occasional whale sightings, but the recent report is particularly significant.

St Martin’s, one of the islands in the archipelago, saw the highest number of whale sightings, including several humpback whales.

The frequent presence of humpbacks is encouraging, given the significance of the archipelago for marine conservation and the study of whale migration patterns.

Whales are known to migrate vast distances, often traveling from colder northern seas to warmer equatorial waters between late May and October for breeding.

Afterward, they return to the colder waters to feed their calves. Some whale species, including the humpback, migrate up to 6,000 miles (9,656 km) during this seasonal trek.

Jay Cowen emphasized that while whale sightings are relatively common around the Isles of Scilly at this time of year, each year brings an exciting sense of anticipation. “Every single year, I am on the edge of my seat waiting for that first sighting of whales,” they said.

The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust has long been dedicated to monitoring marine life in the region and promoting conservation efforts.

Despite the rare nature of some whale species that frequent the waters around the islands, sightings during winter months are not unheard of, and the trust views these encounters as both a valuable opportunity for research and a chance to engage the public in marine conservation.

Cowen also noted that the Isles of Scilly’s location makes it an ideal spot for such sightings, particularly for those rare species that would typically remain in deeper waters.

The influx of whales in the area provides scientists with an opportunity to study migration patterns, behaviors, and habitat preferences of these majestic creatures.

As the investigation into the potential rare species continues, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust remains optimistic about the possibility of further sightings and the valuable data they will gather about marine life in the region.
