Thousands of Austrian Glock Pistols Imported into Russia Despite Sanctions

Of these, 3,203 units originated from Austrian manufacturer Glock GmbH, with an additional 403 units coming from the U.S. firm Glock Inc. The importation of these firearms, crucially, violates EU sanctions placed on Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a recent investigation by The Insider has shed light on the clandestine importation of firearms into Russia, circumventing international sanctions.

The report reveals a network of companies with ties to European arms manufacturers, facilitating the influx of weapons, including Glock pistols, despite restrictions imposed by the European Union (EU).

According to the investigation, since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a staggering 3,606 Glock pistols have been imported into Russia.

Of these, 3,203 units originated from Austrian manufacturer Glock GmbH, with an additional 403 units coming from the U.S. firm Glock Inc. The importation of these firearms, crucially, violates EU sanctions placed on Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine.

The investigation further exposes the key players involved in the illicit arms trade. Kolchuga LLC, Orel LLC, Test-Oruzhie LLC, and Fort LLC, collectively imported 1,667 pistols, with links to Russkiy Orel LLC, majority-owned by Beretta Holding S.A. Inc. based in Luxembourg.

Alliance LLC imported 150 pistols and 115 Austrian ISSC SPA carbines, with founders having connections to Lynxnight s.r.o., a Czech company.

Dana Procházková, managing director of Lynxnight, and her associates Filip Gulčak and Mikhail Udalov, have been implicated in facilitating arms imports into Russia.

Notably, Procházková’s husband, Václav Procházky, represents the ammunition manufacturer Sellier & Bellot in the Czech market, indicating a complex web of relationships in the arms trade.

Moreover, Aurora LLC, Novo-Obninsk-Import LLC, and Artemida LLC, owned by businessmen Nikolai Nefelov and Anatoly Yezhelev, were identified as major importers of Glock pistols into Russia.

The investigation also delves into the localized production of Glock pistols within Russia. In 2012, the Promtechnologia group of companies signed an agreement with Glock GmbH for the assembly of Glock 17, 34, and 35 models.

This agreement, however, sparked controversy in 2013 when activists highlighted inflated government tenders for Glock pistols, implicating individuals with close ties to Russian government officials.

One such official, Dmitry Rogozin, former head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency, drew attention in 2022 for posing with an Austrian-made Glock in occupied Donetsk, Ukraine.

Rogozin’s attire, predominantly sourced from Europe and the United States, raised eyebrows, underscoring the irony of his anti-NATO stance while utilizing NATO gear.

Despite EU sanctions and Austria’s neutrality stance, Austrian weapons, including 169 Steyr Mannlicher rifles and pistols, continue to enter Russia unabated.

This revelation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of international sanctions and underscores the need for enhanced oversight and enforcement mechanisms to curb the illicit arms trade.

The tragic death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent anti-corruption campaigner, in a Russian prison above the Arctic Circle further intensifies concerns about the state of human rights and governance in Russia.

Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, remains committed to continuing his legacy, advocating for justice and accountability in the face of adversity.

As the conflict in Ukraine persists and the flow of weapons into Russia continues, the international community must remain vigilant in addressing the root causes of arms proliferation and holding accountable those who profit from violence and instability.

In response to inquiries regarding the investigation, Glock GmbH and Glock Inc. have yet to provide comment. Efforts to reach representatives of the implicated companies were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

The Insider’s investigation underscores the critical importance of independent journalism in uncovering wrongdoing and holding power to account.

As the world grapples with the ramifications of armed conflict and geopolitical tensions, transparency and accountability remain paramount in fostering a more just and peaceful global order.
