US coronavirus cases hit 11 million as two states announce new restrictions

 

Michigan and Washington on Sunday followed several other states in declaring renewed efforts to combat COVID-19 as higher than 11 million cases of the virus have now been published in the United States.

The newest million cases came in less than a week, as many Americans made to observe a Thanksgiving holiday characterized by the pandemic.
Michigan Gov Gretchen Whitmer’s government ordered high schools and colleges to stop in-person classes, closed establishments to indoor dining and refused designed sports — including the football playoffs — in an effort to control the state’s spiking case figures.

The order also regulates indoor and outdoor private gatherings, closes some amusement facilities and bans gyms from entertaining group exercise classes.

The new rules, set to last three weeks, are huge but not as sweeping the Democratic governor’s stay-at-home order this past season when she met criticism from a Republican-led Legislature that refused to increase the state’s coronavirus crisis declaration and authorized a lawsuit challenging Whitmer’s power to combat the pandemic.

She faced pushback from those who questioned the decision to toughen rather than relax what then was one of the nation’s strictest stay-at-home plans.

The directives from Michigan come on the very day that Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared the state would impose new restrictions on sales and friendly gatherings for the next month as it, too, advanced to combat a rising number of cases.

Starting Tuesday, gyms and some movie centres in Washington will be required to close their indoor services.

Shops, including market stores, will be ordered to limit indoor potential and multiple-household, indoor social groups will be prohibited unless attendees have detained for 14 days or tested negative for COVID-19 and quarantined for a week. By Wednesday, eateries and bars will again be limited to outdoor dining and to-go service.

The actions also follow grim events passed by Texas and California last week as the states each marked more than 1 million established COVID-19 cases since the heart of the pandemic.
